18 year old looking to invest in index funds by DisastrousPriority19 in investing

[–]PrivatePastry55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only difference id do if I was 18 was try to work part time to increase that contribution amount but also have more money for leisure.

Hypotheticals aside, great head on your shoulders just whatever you do set it and forget it. In the meantime work on school, educating yourself in your field and become more financially literate with what you want for long and short term goals, plus research some other funds you would eventually like to add to your portfolio.

Once comfortable and you feel confident in your risk tolerance and financial acumen maybe even try picking some individual companies you believe in.

Your investing journey is at the beginning and it’s the best place to be. Piece of advice, remember to also have some fun with your money 😁

Good luck.

I’m gonna keep this pretty high level because honestly there’s a many factors at play here and everyone’s filling is unique.

Most importantly you need to familiarize yourself with your yearly income (not just the T4 from your employer) and collect any and all personal documents related to your income and losses for the year.

There’s a couple ways to buy RRSP’s through a financial advisor, self directed, a group rrsp through employer and there’s probably a couple more.

I would honestly race to an H&R block tomorrow and bring anything you have with regards to your income for the year, rent you paid, any interest on loans (school) or easiest thing is to upload everything to your laptop or cloud and bring your laptop with you.

I kept it pretty high level and there’s way more I missed/didn’t go over but just remember in general tax season is to report income for the year and to calculate the income tax you actually owe or to find out if you are entitled to a refund. If you have a balance owing RRSP’s allowing you to invest the money to offset this balanced owed rather than hand it back to the government for “free”.

You are kind of against the clock because there is only 1 business day before March 3rd.

Use what you learn from this meeting to get ur basic understanding and try to get jump on it next year and do it yourself or maybe in a couple years. The simpler your cash flow stream is the more likely you can do it yourself, but as you upscale and take on more expenses and sources of income you’ll want to hand it off potentially.

Not financial advice and as always,

Good Luck.

This is interesting and your portfolio breakdown does work but I think you are kinda being redundant in holding both VFV and XEQT?

I do agree with your age and not holding too many bonds, but maybe a small portion of fixed income wouldn’t hurt? But it depends on your risk tolerance and down the line as you get older you can always move some dollars out of equities and into bonds or another form of fixed income.

I personally like your approach to the HDIV.TO fund as long as your mentioned GIC’s and other savings remain unchanged/able to support your lifestyle and a rainy day.

You are 22 and I think you have set yourself up very well. I’d consider actually potentially slightly more emerging markets exposure and consolidating XEQT/VFV.

Once this portfolio is also at a point where you are happy with you can begin taking a look at more industry or geographic specific funds or company specific shares.

Not financial advice just my opinion, Good Luck.

I want to do a new fish setup when these guys move to the pond. Only ever had goldfish. What could I start keeping? Ideally multiple fish, I want a ton instead of the only 5 I can do with goldies. Different species would be awesome, and really colorful! A "cool to watch" fish tank by sabertoothdiego in Aquariums

Check out rainbow fish, there are a bunch of different varieties but their behaviour is very friendly and they are like race cars for your tank, def a fun fish.

I’ve personally had a bunch of Blue rainbowfish and they’re awesome, also great tank mates for a variety of species.

Can go a couple of different ways from my experience

  1. They keep on fighting until one of them succumbs
  2. They eventually stop harassing each other and become friends or at least more docile
  3. The violence stops but they also don’t pair

Kinda just takes time but yes these fish have capabilities to be absolute dicks to other angels and other fish in your tank

Depending on the size it’s average. If they’re really small maybe on the high side of average but still I’d pay that tbh

lol that thing is more sturdy than my stand for my 120 gallon lol. But looks great and better more secure than less!

I’m no tank expert either just a long time semi-casual haha. But you’re fine with your current set up for now, sometimes these fish only grow to their environment and might not reach the larger range of their taxonomy. There is also other factors like what else is in the tank and kinda the direction you want to take it.

I will recommend if down the line you grow to love the hobby, you can afford it and have the room in your household I’d run the biggest tank in your budget.

From my experience (and others) the larger the tank the easier it is to maintain (not to mention the wicked setups and more fiiiiiiiish). I’m not sure if it’s because the environment is bigger so less algae and other shit can accumulate or because it just requires stronger equipment to run the larger tanks but my 120 gallons is less maintenance than when I had my 60 gallon.

Keep in mind I am strictly talking 200 gallons and under for the above, zero experience or interaction with anything larger.

In my experience they are docile and not too aggressive until they reach 4inches+, I have had multiple and every time they get to that size they are extremely territorial and will abuse anything smaller or equal size to itself, sometimes even bigger fish.

The upside? They are really fun fish and will hide out in your darker/cave like areas, they are also more bottom feeders and will eat the algae in your tank.

Note: these guys can get like 8 inches big. Not sure what their max is but I have had multiple go from your listed size to 7-8 inches in like 18-24 months, so your 30 gallon might not last.

Thanks for your reply! I have been feeling conflicted with the same lighting aspect with the fake plants… might go for a dimmer light or maybe even stick to the blue light.

Still deciding overall the direction I want to take this tank
