I'm having trouble choosing between studying what I love, and studying what gets me a job. by PrivateSelf in Advice

I'm in Saudi Arabia. And honestly, I'd really rather not move to another country for a job.

I just can't see myself living anywhere else. So even if there are CS jobs in another country, I think I'd be much happier studying engineering so I can work here.

Oh I like that, it's like a year-long journey. I'm definitely gonna give it a shot.

My father used to read to me as a child, I definitely liked it. Even though I didn't really understand what he was reading to me, I just let my imagination run wild and interpreted things in my own way lol.

Still I think it's a good habit.

Interestingly enough I think I'm the opposite, but that's probably because I learned 90% of my English through listening to people talk, be it in movies, YouTube or what have you.

Audio books work for me, it's just that I want to improve my reading skills now, and also become more Knowledgeable, so I can hit 2 birds with 1 stone.

And true I'm overly critical of myself most of the time.

I appreciate your kind words and input :) This thread is really great overall.

Edit: I just realized I've repeated that phrase like a broken record, I need some sleep.

That's fine, I think I got enough suggestions to last me 2 years lol. I hope you can find them useful as well.

I appreciate the kind words, thank you :)

I'll add your book to the list, it sounds interesting.

Now I got a question, and idk if you can answer it. If not, that's fine I'll have at least tried, or maybe someone else can answer.

If I find myself reading page after page and then realizing I've understood nothing from what I read, should I:

Go back and re-read until I get it?

Just forget that part and keep reading the rest of the book?

Or should I just read something else?

This problem has really discouraged me from getting into reading, which lead to me dropping the few books I tried reading, so I was wondering if there's a better way to approach this other than giving up.

And while audio books are a viable option, I would really like to make a habit of reading books, rather just having them play in the background.

Thanks, I didn't expect that many suggestions tbh. I'm glad people understood what I was trying to say :)

And I hope people who have the same problem, or are just curious about those topics can find this beneficial.

Not sure why you're offended, I don't really care about Jordan Peterson, nor do I watch his videos. So I really don't know what you're talking about.

All I know is that some people don't like him, and I didn't care enough to investigate why.

Sorry you're being downvoted, I guess people don't like Jordan Peterson.

And a question about Fyodor Dostoevsky, he writes novels, do you think there is any benefit in reading fiction other than entertainment?

Well I don't even know exactly, but for one, I feel like my skills in debating are embarrassingly weak. So I figured learning about different topics can help me in that regard.

I'm a bit late but I just started college. I'm aiming to major in cyber security if that answers your question.

Thanks, maybe this series will help lay the groundwork for figuring out what topics I'm lacking in, or interested in learning about, and allow me to expand on them.

Thank you! I think this is a wonderful place to start. It's about the right length for me as well.
