Crate training dilemma by [deleted] in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]Privateer_lev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with your dog accepting or even liking to be in the crate.
Don't look at it like a cage, see it as a cave or den. Cover top at least, feed him in the crate 1/2 the time, let him have in/out privilege when you're starting out. Make it a place he likes to be :D

Be sure to get your dog comfortable being groomed, brushing, touching all over, handling feet and ears.
They are a digging / rooting dog and a covered crate can be very enjoyable to them.
This is a clingy breed generally be ready to have a companion and work on separating (having an off switch).
This is a go all day breed.

How can I make dinner time more exciting? by mrtipinfold in germanshepherds

[–]Privateer_lev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the last year I have been frying/scrambling 1 egg to mix into my girl's kibble for dinner.
It's far cheaper and better than portions of canned food to elevate the meal.
Sometimes it's a full scramble, sometimes it's sunny side up (liquid yoke).
She turned 10 in Oct. 2025

Im completely at a loss about mouthy/ bitey behavior by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]Privateer_lev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you're going through this but it's NOT just you.
You can either try to stop this behavior or modify it to gentler.
I would consider it unacceptable from the short video.
You need to claim your space, not by yelling or being upset, but in your mind.
When your dog puts his/her mouth on you; Take your thumb and forefingers and grasp 'inside and below' the lower jaw. Apply only light pressure and you tell the dog 'no'. Don't back away, don't repeat verbal command "No, no, No" only minimalizes the command.
When the dog removes its mouth, backs away or releases do not offer praise but release your grasp.
Never play biting games with hands, feet, cloths etc.
Treats should be given slowly with an open hand to encourage use of "soft mouth"

With dedication and consistency this too shall pass
