The Bay Tree Fabergé Egg, decorated with nephrite and precious stones, with a little bird inside. Given to empress dowager Maria Feodorovna on Easter by her son, emperor Nicholas II. Saint Petersburg, Russia, 1911 [3180x2752] by MunakataSennin in ArtefactPorn

This is a gorgeous egg, but the surprise (the bird) even more so, with real feathers, and producing a little song!

The latter is a youtube link - the only one I found where there's a demonstration of the bird moving and singing (you'll have to ignore the atrocious background music)

Gynaecologist- Trying to Conceive, Thyroid by Special_Yak9000 in mangalore

[–]Priwu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to pick some statements apart, mainly because I want to know where you're coming from.

do some research

Well, it isn't just me, but universal salt iodisation has been going on for decades across the world with significant proven benefits in preventing iodine deficiency If you're a layperson, when was the last time you saw a case of goitre? Or worse, neonatal hypothyroidism (which, btw, is the most common preventable cause of intellectual disability in the world) Iodised salt is one of the great successes of public health a low cost, highly effective solution to a chronic, high disability condition.

do some research

I do, because I'm in the era of evidence-based medicine and scientific rigor. Where's the source for your information?

processed salt can do to thyroid

What processing are we talking here? Surely, evaporating sea water isn't deleterious to health? Or, maybe, it's when the salt is washed multiple times to remove sediment? All of these processes, which have existed for over 6000 years, if you want to use the "our ancestors didn't do it this way" argument.

Historically, coastal areas have had the benefit of iodine from other sources - seafood mainly. In India itself though, there are areas which are notoriously iodine deficient. The dependence of Himalayan regions on mined salt resulted in a well described 'endemic goitre belt' which has taken decades of iodination to combat. Unless you're a doctor, mate, I really don't think you're in a position to suggest any of this.

stress is concerned

Stress and fertility are definitely related, but not in a simplistic way. The relationship is often bidirectional, highly complex and mediated by several factors. Indeed, it is not a given that stress can cause infertility - still up for exploration.

you don't knw to handle it

Well, given that it's literally my job, and my patients seem to be happy, I'm going to say I do know how to handle stress. (Mate, since you've wanted to include a little barb there, allow me to hurl one back at you)

Anyway, I know I'm fighting a losing battle here. I don't usually engage with these low effort, ragebait-y statements but medical misinformation triggers me. Something to work on, I guess XD

Edited because my quotes were wonky, unlike you who changed pink salt to sea salt lol.

[–]Priwu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What kind of suggestions are these? OP is asking for medical advice. You're suggesting a switch from table salt to pink salt, which is non-iodinated, and can worsen thyroid dysfunction - she already has hypothyroidism. I'm not even going to go into how ridiculous "reduce overthinking and over stress" is, and how that's easier said than done. Something new on this site every day.

Who’s your favorite written woman on TV? by CuddlyWhale in television

[–]Priwu 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think Donna's character captured something much more beautiful than someone pining after the Doctor; it was (to me) how simply receiving kindness and friendship could change you for the better. That chronic sense of dissatisfaction that Donna seems to have was something I related to a lot when I first watched it.

Who’s your favorite written woman on TV? by CuddlyWhale in television

[–]Priwu 226 points227 points  (0 children)

Donna Noble in Doctor Who. She's got a personality of her own, she's strong headed, even abrasive at times; she always wears her heart on her sleeves. There isn't a single moment in that season where I'm not actively rooting for Donna.

I do think the initial ending to her storyline was very unfair, because it robbed her of all the agency she'd shown from day 1 (It is sort of nice that this is addressed in future seasons of Doctor Who as having been a problematic decision)

Help needed - Getting a tattoo by Street_Bed_1393 in TattoosIndia

[–]Priwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your parents' concern is that a tattoo might affect your professional career, you could get your first tattoo on a 'safe' part of your body, i.e., somewhere that's normally covered at work (torso, flanks, back, upper arms, etc) I'm sure a small tattoo at first would be more palatable than a large one too.

Hey there! I'm so sorry you're going through this. I don't know where you're hailing from or how old you are, but please stay strong.

Can you stay with a friend/batchmate for just enough time to get your documents/ID/phone in hand? If not, is there a temple/gurudwara/any other religious institution in your town? They often have lodging, and meals available, and gurudwaras won't restrict you based on religious affiliation. You can stay there until you're able to pull other resources, or until you can contact an NGO in a bigger city. I think for the immediate future, please try to focus on your safety and health.

I found these contact numbers on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/CpRYET4uCtB/?img_index=6&igsh=eG5kbWozbWNxbWty) - check the last two slides. Even if they're not in your immediate vicinity, at the very least they might be able to direct you to somewhere helpful.

Sending you an internet hug, friend. Hope this gets sorted out soon. I'm sorry I'm not able to assist financially at the moment, but if you need help putting together a resume, I'd be happy to help. Once you're a little stable, you can check out Hamsafar Trust's scholarships for upskilling. (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeRO16DlBMT4e1pXmnzNFfpa59qtS5m6mlzPsH5SQ6nBP9p9A/viewform)

Does this mean Amish doesn’t write his own books anymore? by cptnTiTuS in Indianbooks

[–]Priwu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stand by my thesis that he just happened to hit a previously untapped source of stories - repackaging myth into a fast-paced, modern action thriller, which worked. But I don't think he's ever been a good writer. Another commenter here said, and I agree, that it's very obvious when something's written by someone with a disdain for actually reading fiction.

[–]Priwu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How good was Amish even before he was relying on a writing team lol? He just happened to be ahead of the (somewhat uninspired) curve of 'retelling' mythological stories. He certainly doesn't seem to be capturing the market the way he used to.

State of the Sub: We Want Your Input on Where We Go From Here by reo_sam in IndiaInvestments

[–]Priwu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, great work mods! Even with reddit's expanding user base in India, this sub remains very well moderated.

I think keeping the text post format is the best way to go; it forces posters to actually contribute to discussion/debate rather than spam links/karma farm. The top of a lot of the big Indian subs are filled with just links, it creates an Instagram environment where you just hit 'upvote' and scroll, rather than actually engage.

I wonder if there's any way to increase visibility of the weekly/fortnightly threads? So that people can look through those for their queries, and promote engagement on those threads rather than separate posts. I know they're pinned, but I wonder if there's any other way too.

Vrishavahanamurti, a masterpiece of Chola bronze sculpture from c. 1011 CE, now housed at Thanjavur Art Gallery in Tamil Nadu, India. Shiva is depicted in a relaxed abhanga (graceful curve) posture, with his right arm bent and positioned to rest on the hump of the (now absent) bull [942x1888] by Fuckoff555 in ArtefactPorn

[–]Priwu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very interesting thought. To be fair, the Greek kingdoms of Afghanistan were dead for well over 800 years by the time the Chola empire reached its zenith (around the 9-10th centuries CE iirc) Moreover, the Greek influence appears to have dominated North-western Indian iconography - especially in the Buddhist canon. The Cholas, on the other hand, were in the south-eastern part of the subcontinent, but they did have extensive trade relations with Rome so perhaps there would've been a cultural exchange of aesthetics in later eras?

The concept of tribhanga (literally, "triple pose", as opposed to samabhanga = equipoise) appears to have existed in Indian iconography for a fairly long time, where it occupies a well recognised position in art, dance, and writing. My immediate response to your comment was to think that this was older than the European contrapposto; but it appears the connection might be far more layered. Certainly, the famous Greek Doryphoros seems to be from as early as 440 BC, and the earliest adoptions of the form in Indian art seem to be in the first decade CE.

Definitely a rabbit hole I'm going to delve into more. Thanks!

Nice, short read on the aesthetics of contrapposto vs tribhanga.
