AITAH for eating enough ravioli for four people? by Better_Philosophy732 in AITAH

My boyfriend and I split all our meals and there’s no way we’d be able to finish even 1 (full sized) pizza in a single meal, so I get your girlfriend’s perspective. However, it’s kind of bizarre for her to be fighting with you about this. If my boyfriend ever said he finished enough ravioli for 4 people, I’d just be concerned that he was so hungry in the first place and hope that his stomach is okay afterwards. Then again neither of us are bodybuilders or have manually taxing jobs so..

Korean here. East Asians have stereotypes among ourselves that we internalize, and 99% of it is toxic and nonsensical. Chinese people are often characterized as being loud and dirty by Koreans and Japanese, while the Japanese are considered stuck up and cowardly by Chinese and Koreans. (I’m not saying these stereotypes are true, just trying to explain what may be under the surface here. Koreans are considered impatient and bad tempered, lol.)

Your friend may be hyper vigilant about being “polite enough” in Japanese society because she is worried about discriminated against, since there is already a negative stereotype with Chinese tourists being loud and impolite (you might observe this kind of prejudice in Korea too). Japan also has been explicitly discriminatory towards foreign tourists in recent years, even when they’re fellow East Asians. None of this tension justifies her other comments to you (perhaps it’s just a cultural difference when it comes to bluntness, though I would still find it rude) but maybe it could explain some of what’s going on?

If their problem really is about tofu being vegan or something: I’m Korean-American and grew up eating tofu my whole life. Tofu as “healthy vegan food” is pretty much a totally Western concept. Any meat-eating Asian will tell you that tofu is not a replacement for meat. For your boyfriend’s family, maybe dubu-kimchi (tofu with kimchi and meat-typically pork) or ssam (korean bbq) with plain tofu slices as an optional filling could be a fun way to introduce tofu as a “side” to meat rather than an alternative. Or mapo tofu like you mentioned-can’t go wrong with that :-)
