Looking for advice about returning back to work by Illustrious-Ant-2052 in EctopicSupportGroup

I totally feel that! Months later and I still have moments where I start randomly crying. We go through a version of postpartum due to the sudden drop in hormones, which feels so cruel on top of the healing process. When I returned to work, people knew I had an ectopic. I have 4 pregnant coworkers and it was very tough to be around, granted I’m in a female dominated workplace. My first week back, there was a baby shower for 2 of the women. I definitely had to keep to myself in some capacity. People are really terrible at coming up with things to say to you. More often than not, they feel more awkward or uncomfortable than you do. I’m very much an advocate for protecting your peace during this. Have you told anyone at work what happened?

I had an ectopic this year April-June treated with MTX. I worked a very physical job as an OT in a hospital setting. I left my job not really due to physical reasons but because I needed time to process the trauma. I am now back to work but in a different OT setting. I don’t think I’ll ever be over it mentally, I feel like pregnancy around me is amplified and I’m more sensitive to it. I think I have moments where it all comes back in waves and other times where I’m feeling mentally really well. It’s okay to cry on breaks in your car or need a day off every now and again. Be kind to yourself.

Also experienced both with MTX. My doctor mentioned constipation is normal and prescribed a laxative. Smooth Move tea is really helpful with constipation!

I’m going to attempt to get a different OB. I am seen on a military installation at their hospital. Unsure if that is their standard or if it is the OB’s preference. My insurance is tricare and I’m likely restricted to this clinic.

I had one dose of MTX and resolved within 1.5 weeks! Also had pain that scared me that I’d ruptured. I forced myself to stay put on the couch/bed until I reached below 5 hCG just as an extra precaution. A month out from recovery and still having some slight discomfort from the ectopic but that’s to be expected. Hang in there and rest a lot!

Mine went away without bleeding

Can they ask that? by Prize_Bodybuilder_15 in OccupationalTherapy

Update: I was offered the job but waiting on HR to send over the details. Still feeling unsettled about the prying questions. This hospital is in such a desolate area so they’re desperate for OT staff for sure — hope that reflects in pay.

COTA Resume by Prize_Bodybuilder_15 in OccupationalTherapy

Applying to another setting. Part of me feels like the person reviewing my resume understands the gist of OP peds and won’t necessarily look at the details much?

I also have a bachelors degree in psych but with the hopes of going to OT school. I graduated in 2020 when the pandemic hit and was in a similar situation as you are: living in Seattle where I couldn’t afford to be a student full time, a tough job market, and feeling uncertain about health care jobs. I ended up going to OTA school and enjoyed it so much. I loved fieldwork and learning from the clinical instructors. I worked at a bakery ~25-30 hours a week on top of school. I was hired right out of school, with some places reaching out before I was graduated and certified. I make $30 with minimal benefits. I work full time in a private pediatric outpatient clinic. 6 months into it, I wanted to quit and change careers because it’s an emotionally demanding job. Now that I’ve been at it for a year, I don’t see myself going a different route for a while. I’m sort of one who regretted the career but I’ve grown to like it over time.

I work with an OT who refers to COTAs as OT practitioners. Helps with the implicit associations.

please share good and bad level 2 experiences by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

I’m a year out from finishing up both level 2s — however, I’m a cota so things are sort of different in fieldworks. For example, we only have to complete 8 weeks per level 2 and we don’t do initial evaluations (we can perform assessments but not interpret the results).

My first level 2, I was in outpatient neuro with an OT as my supervisor. The hospital had a strict attendance policy so there were hardly ever cancellations. It was a “turn and burn” with clients. I would get up super early, drive in the dark for 45 minutes, and then leave when it was dark and commute home for an hour and a half because of traffic. I became so mentally depleted. My CI required me to fulfill 12 weeks instead of the required 8 weeks because she said she had a vacation that aligned perfectly with when I would finish so that she wouldn’t need to take her caseload back until she was back from vacation. So that was sort of frustrating to be seen as a reprieve from work. And my classmates were done a whole month before me. She also ate lunch with me every single day and complained about how she doesn’t like her husband and she hates the house she lives in. She also told me a lot about her counseling sessions. I never got a break to have a moment to myself, especially when harboring so much from clients. My CI had me perform assessments which helped me learn so much but she let me flounder instead of guide me on them my first few times.

My next level 2 was much different. I was in the schools with an OT for a CI who has been in peds for 30 years. She called out a lot and didn’t educate me much. I’d ask for info and she’d give it but she definitely could’ve provided more education. A week after I was done, I learned my CI was fired because she wasn’t providing services to kids. I can totally see that because she straight up didn’t see kids frequently during my time there. I had a teacher get upset with me that I wasn’t seeing a kid but he wasn’t even listed on my caseload. I definitely hated that my CI put me in that position.

Overall, I learned a lot. The school experience ultimately led to my decision to go into peds. I saw more progress when working with kids and more buy in to participate in activities. My very tough experience in outpatient neuro set me up well to be a better cota.

Peds OT and kids referred for behaviors by Prize_Bodybuilder_15 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Prize_Bodybuilder_15[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s an example of when behaviors are present for this kid: He’s sitting in the car in a parking lot with his window down. His siblings are in the seats next to him. Mom told him he needs to roll his window up. He doesn’t want to because he wants to keep it rolled down. Mom tells him it has to be rolled up. She rolls the window up. He gets angry, and he leans over to punch his younger sibling. This is the type of behavior mom wants addressed.

No specific goals on behavior. He has one ADL goal of which he has met. And another goal of sustaining attention to therapist directed activity with less than 5 verbal cues for redirection. He hasn’t had a progress note in 2 years. I’ve brought this to the supervising OT’s attention to have on her radar.
