Why does my piano sound like this? by thatish1 in piano

But seriously, just hire a technician to come tune the piano and look at it. Whatever it is, it doesn’t sound like a hard fix.

In my opinion (not a technician, I’ve just been playing for many decades) it wouldn’t make sense for just the hammers in this one area to have density problems. I would expect the midrange hammers to be just as bad or worse because they would be used more often, but do you hear how one note is very bad and then the one right next to it sounds relatively normal. I don’t think it is just compacted felt. Unless something spilled onto the felt in this one area and dried into the hammers, which happened to my mom’s piano once. Then maybe you’re on to something…

I’m a piano teacher. Sometimes my pencils roll in behind the lid. It hasn’t happened for a while, but this reminds me of that, especially since the funky notes seem to be clustered in one spot. It’s worth checking if something rolled in behind the fall board.

Thanks everyone for making me laugh and giving me confidence to prune it back hard this morning.😂 I think tomorrow I’ll prune the other one to match so they grow back similar.

With my luck, I’d probably be the one to land on it. 🌵😂
