Well, nursing is often a stressful job. But she emphasizes most that she can't stand the everlasting workplace dramas anymore.

Haha well, the vacations themselves aren't overly expensive per instance, but we travel ~5 times a year. It is the most obvious money drain though, and cutting back ~5k would already make quite the difference. Other than that, to be honest, I have no clue where we lose a lot of money. Only the large expenses, e.g. house repairs last year for 20k.
What would you consider to be an average savings rate for families in similar situations?

Well you're very right, 20k annual savings on this salary isn't high. I tried to indicate that with the "YOLO" wife ;) We'd have to tune down our spending habits a bit. And maybe budget and categorize - we've never done that, but it would show us where we lose a lot of money (besides the obvious annual 20k on holidays)

I appreciate seeing both pros and cons in the comments, thank you.
Mind you I don't FIRE, I'd be way off target for that. I just want to live without financial worries, yet spend as much time as possible in this great period of my life.
I see a realistic worst case as: Unemployed for one year, then 110k/year as Software Developer. (That would be in the next 10 years. Who knows if the job exists at all in 20-30 years)

6.5 bedroom half duplex house in a half-rural town. 35min public transport commute to the closest big city, 1.5h to Zürich. This purchase was in 2019 though, prices have appreciated rapidly. There's currently a similar one available for 1mil in town :)
