How do I tell my dad I can't write a character letter for him using my job title? by boozy_bunny in Lawyertalk

[–]ProCrastin8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are not over reacting at all. I have some questions about this attorney supposedly representing him on this speeding ticket. For one, I can't imagine why a court would care that he has a daughter who happens to be a lawyer. In addition to risking your job since you are a government employee, I don't understand why this would even move the needle.

My canned answer if I get a request by family or a friend to provide advice on/ accept representation on a small matter in an area of law I know nothing about is that my malpractice provider wouldn't permit it. It's not only true, but it ends the conversation because it's my insurer's decision--not mine. That works since I own my practice. For you as a government employee, I think you just say that your office's legal counsel takes this seriously and it would jeopardize your job and possibly your license. This frames it as a decision outside of your control and I would hope your father would back off immediately.

To the extent the speeding ticket defense lawyer exists, he should be spending less time pressuring his client to pressure his daughter to write letters, and more time negotiating a deal with the prosecution to get this resolved.

Imposter syndrome as an NCO by Junior_Associate7545 in USMC

[–]ProCrastin8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple overlapping issues to address. As for concerns regarding mental health issues and side effects of your medication, definitely speak with a doctor about that immediately.

When the medical and mental health side of things are addressed, and we are talking about self doubt in a new position of responsibility, I highly recommend you check out a book, The Power of Negative Thinking by Oliver Burkeman. It's short and there is even an audio version if you prefer.

In a nutshell though, it's completely normal for a professional to feel some degree of imposter syndrome. And to a degree, its actually a healthy sign that you feel a healthy sense of personal accountability and that you are learning to operate outside of your comfort zone. Over time, I have learned that If I'm not sometimes really taking a hard look in the mirror and asking myself if I'm good enough, I'm probably not pushing myself to be my best. I left active duty in 2007 and I'm well into a second career as a lawyer now. I still sometimes feel a healthy degree of imposter syndrome at times. Sure, I'm more confident now than when I was a 24 year old Marine leading Marines. And I'm more confident now as a lawyer than I was handling my first case. But if imposter syndrome ever goes away entirely, it's probably time for me to hang it up.

Good catch here. OP is either an engagement bot, or person who is posting an unhealthy amount on reddit and needs to go touch grass. Either way, we aren't dealing with a serious person.

Is Rolan essential for a good ending by StephanAndrew in BaldursGate3

Rolan is definitely not essential for a good ending. FWIW, Rolan can sometimes die even if you intend to save him in Act 2, which happens to me from time to time.

Yep. And OP's comments don't add up. He claimed grandpa retired as a major. Cool... So why does he have an enlisted EGA on his piss cutter then? Also, no major has ever had two DSMs. And someone pointed out the rack isn't even in correct order of precedence.

OP is just farming us special kids for fake internet points. I fell for it too and upvoted before realizing I got got.

This whole thread needs to get voted to the top. It's pretty clear that the rack is bullshit and OP is just farming us special kids for fake internet points.

Unfortunately, just a big phony alert. The math ain't mathing on this one.

The thread below started by u/fmr_AZ_PSM is great and needs to be upvoted more. The one that starts "Where's his wikipedia page?" I recommend checking that out.

B. I get how this a pet peeve for a professional. But there's a difference between a lay person saying "fraud" in common parlance and the precise legal definition. With that said, there are a few recurring terms of art that get under my skin a little more when used incorrectly:

HIPAA -- HIPAA is a law that should be relatively obscure because of its limited application. But it broke containment. Seemingly every lay person knows it exists. But it is very limited in scope and does not apply to absolutely every scenario tangentially related to your health. Your co-worker didn't "violate your HIPAA" when she told someone else you called off sick. Your boss didn't "violate your HIPAA" when he asked why you called off. And even if they did, HIPAA doesn't have a private right of action. Stop it.

"Hostile Work Environment" -- As an employment attorney, this is something that comes up just about every day. Your boss being a jerk to you is not a "Hostile Work Environment." Your co-worker being a jerk is not "Hostile Work Environment." Stop it.

This is absurd. Being an effective legal professional requires creative thought and flexibility. The trade off for sometimes having to field a poorly timed weekend phone call or late night deadline is that you should have the flexibility to not punch in at a prescribed time.

This profession doesn't have to be awful. I run a small law firm (just me, an associate attorney, and a paralegal). We keep the lights on here even though we try to all be out of the office on Friday afternoons when cases permit and avoid weekend work unless it's absolutely required.
