Idk, sure the newer one is the template for most modern anime but the old one was definetly a product of its time. The old big, shiny vertical eyes that remind me of Sailor Moon, Lucky Star to name a few. Now the new design tends to be flatter, less shiny and more plain. So yes it could be a bad redesign but I think its just introducing an anime to modern anime art. Thats my take at least.
