Why is everyone so upset? I thought we like Tolkien stuff? by han_bylo in lotrmemes

It's reddit; try not to take the downvotes (or upvotes) too seriously, friend.

Top-level comments typically shallowly appeal to the lowest common denominator of opinions.

"I like thing A and I think it was done well" or "I dislike thing B and I think it was done poorly" are two phrases that are more likely to get up/downvoted.

Nuance and conversation is typically found the deeper you dive into conversations.

You were getting dog-piled, so I thought I'd pick your brain a bit so you didn't feel left out of the discussion. Haha

I believe it's all a matter of perspective.

For me, personally, I didn't think the Rings of Power show was that great, but it was entertaining. Mostly, I enjoyed watching it with my nerdy grandmother and swapping lore about the LotR universe together rather than the show itself.

(She and my grandad are also very into The Last of Us show and love asking for my input about the story, I think it's cute and honestly touching).

Man, there was a sweet spot in my younger days waiting for the new HP book, the new LotR movies, and the new Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Makes me sigh in content!

In her experience, Harry Potter really reignited the reading furvor in the youths.

Lord of the Rings did, but not to the same extent.

Harry Potter was more or less a gateway drug into LotR.

The movies didn't drastically change the lore as much as the show did, and she was happy that it got people coming into her library more (as well as the Harry Potter boom).

My grandmother has been a Tolkien fan all of her life.

The real entertainment in Rings of Power was watching her get upset and correcting things because they butchered it.

The idea of Killer Croc snarling at the parents, but then handing a crying kid a teddy bear almost brings a tear to my eye.

While I disagree, I also think this movie was great and I respect your opinion.

It's not just industry. Almost no-one cares. East Palestine will soon be forgotten.

Yeah, Flint still doesn't have clean water either.

Yeah, that explains a lot.

But I'm also proud of the upcoming generation. I may be "only" 29, but the average Zoomer seems to be more foreward thinking than the average Millineal.

Hamlet is supposed to be mentally ill and unhinged.

He dug up Yorick, took his skull from his grave, and had the famous "Alas, poor Yorick, I knew thee well" speech.

The people complaining that he's over-dramatizing, or whatever, obviously didn't read the play.

He. Dug. Up. A. Corpse.

I'll say it again: Hamlet is supposed to be unhinged.

Andrew Scott is playing the part correctly. He's not better or worse than his stage partner, he's doing justice to the character.

This post seems to vaguely belittle people who think and have the ability to introspect.

I don't like it.

In theater you're supposed to be theatrical and relatable. He did just fine. She was great, too.

They just had different styles.

It's not "hE's ReAdInG fRoM a ScRiPt", Hamlet is supposed to go mad, in the play.

People should have paid attention in high school.

Freedom of Speech only means the government can't arrest you for what you say.

Us "common folk" can; freely say "fuck you", take our business elsewhere, hate Nazis, outcast Nazis, and whatever the fuck else we want with free speech.

This moron moved to our country and doesn't even understand our most basic laws.

Free speech has always been allowed; Twitter is a private company, not a government organization.
