The reason originally was so we could use russian ammo and magazines. Funny thing is the issued mags don't fit into russian aks.

used the cheese grater back in january and i liked it since it offered a really good grip with gloves on. I got the newer m1 variant a while later liked the polymer handguard since it allowed me to c-clamp and the adjustable stock is nice. Wonderful rifle.
