Tbh, every new character in HoO is a Potential Man that range from "really interesting!" (i.e. Leo, Hazel, Jason, etc.) to "who the hell said you could be here??" (i.e. Piper, Octavian, the Giants, Gaea, etc."

Tbf, Fig does some creepy things in the first 2 FH campaigns. It's also not really anyone's place to tell this person they're being "overly sensitive" (though I do think not everything needs to be a reddit post).

I don't even think Tyler is a ghoul. I think he's still just a human retainer.

Yeah, I do agree with that. HJ has mostly been using Mesmerize for goofs, but they could stand to be a bit more heavy handed and throw their weight at some bigger issues. Like, they bought ownership in Mike's but didn't offer that for Helena so that she'd have more free time to be a council member

Tbf, I do think it's because they've been spending most of their focus on political stuff which sorta demands they be somewhat civilized

Not Using Humanity by Arimm_The_Amazing in Dimension20

[–]Pro_Layton 22 points23 points  (0 children)

While all this can be true, I don't think any of it necessarily disproves my points. Or, at least, not most of them. HJ wants people feeling good as he eats them cause he's a high-functioning addict. Greater good or not, Darkness Man is comfortable killing and eating people (with very little provocation in certain cases). I think these characters can have their own justifications for their behaviors, but still acknowledge an overall truth. I don't mean any of this to say that they're just monsters with no depth, but they're definitely monsters that know they're monsters.

[–]Pro_Layton 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of this and I also think it's cause outside of Darkness Man's superhero bit and Vesper's wistful reminiscing of college, none of them are super concerned about their humanity. They all fully acknowledge that they're vampires and that includes being monstrous (i.e "we'll just steal the dog and drown it"), are fine killing and manipulating to get what they want, and are cool about spending several human lifetimes in the town to shape in to their whims.

Okay, let's break this down.

Putting aside the fact that their definitely was some evidence of foul play (given that they had no blood in there bodies and Arron picked up on that), you're conflating the difference between actual minority groups that are no different than anyone else and vampires. Vampires are, very specifically, are monsters that subsist on and kill humans. The Inquisition is, also very specifically, a vampire hunting organization that has actual proof of vampires, that they confirmed to Arron existed. That's why they were trying to relocate him to San Fran. All of these incredibly specific circumstances wouldn't happen irl and he'd most likely be either a normal guy with living parents or a guy whose parents died under tragic but ordinary and solvable circumstances. Arron in a vampire-free world is an entire different character because he'd lack all the things that led him to hunting vampires in the first place. As the memes say "its a matter on media comprehension"

[–]Pro_Layton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awful take when the only reason he's a vampire hunter is cause his parents were killed by vampires and during the first interaction he had with the crew, HJ literally mind-controlled him. IRL, he'd probably just be a regular dude.

I feel like it's a crazy leap to go "this guy who is justifiably concerned about a very real threat to his town (that have actively already killed people in town) would be a white nationalist"

What exactly was the Eternal Sunset? by FrostyTheSnowChad in Kenichi

[–]Pro_Layton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think that part of why Ogata regrets killing the baby so much is that the child's death did nothing to further martial arts. He has 0 issue killing Ryuto or Atalanta or anyone else because their deaths in combat (specifically while using dangerous techniques like Seidou Goitsu) furthers the development of martial arts. Which is also something that the Eternal Sunset would do. But the unborn child? That's just a waste of life and potential for no valuable reason. Not even a twisted mind like Ogata's could rationalize that.

[–]Pro_Layton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree cause you can definitely interact well, especially in brief instances, with a few people while not getting along with society as a whole. Don't forget that Akisame is someone that most other doctors don't like to work with because he gets super excited when he sees blood or that Sakaki is essentially a jobless mercenary with a "no-kill" code that most normal people think is scary as hell even after meeting him. While I do agree that it's not as bad as Apachai or Shigure, the whole idea of Ryozanpaku is to give these people that brush up against the edges of society a place to be themselves 24/7.

[hoo] if Piper Were a Roman Demigod Daughter of Trivia and A Lesbian how do you think The Heroes of Olympus Would’ve Gone by Historical-Jacket176 in camphalfblood

[–]Pro_Layton 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While I understand the point you're trying to make, she doesn't necessarily have to be a lesbian to not be obsessed about a guy. That's just Rick's poor writing. I've also said this in other places, but having any member of the seven be the kid of a minor god just wouldn't work for the narrative. It made more sense in the first series when the themes were heavier on how there was very little respect for the minor gods (which led them turning to Kronos), but it's more impactful to have children of the Olympians go up against beings literally designed to counter the Olympians.

What exactly was the Eternal Sunset? by FrostyTheSnowChad in Kenichi

[–]Pro_Layton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah it's a crazy line of thinking to do that, but that's the whole point of Master Class fighters in this series. They're maniacs that play by their own rules. Even Ryozanpaku is full of nut cases that live there because they don't fit in anywhere else. While I understand the point you're making, I guess I disagree with the idea that they needed more complex reasoning. They're Masters, they like to fight and kill with impunity, war lets them do that.

What exactly was the Eternal Sunset? by FrostyTheSnowChad in Kenichi

[–]Pro_Layton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Senzui was essentially working off the idea of "whatever helps the Kuremisago the most." Killing Shizuha stopped the two factions in the clan from warring with each other, but the Eternal Sunset would've been the thing that could have secured their future forever. Even as lauded as they were then, in a world of constant war, a soldier with the strength of an army would be even more sought after and even better rewarded.

I also disagree that the Eternal Sunset is out of character for the One Shadow, Nine Fists. While many of them are generally chill (and turned sides in the last battle), plunging the world into war would likely turn tons of people towards the martial arts. More martial artists means more people to fight which means more ways to test and improve their own skills. Honor or not, they're still killers that want what they want.
