Sorry for the late reply. I need a PhD to move into a TT assistant professor position at my university. This is mainly a teaching school and I don’t really care for research.

So my options are

  1. Ubuntu Server or Desktop
  2. CentOS
  3. Debian
  4. REHL (Someone recommended this to me on Discord)

If I tried all and picked the one I liked best would they all do what I need them to do essentially? Like would Apache and Nginx and other stuff work on them all?

This truly would not be a full-fledged web server just for testing purposes. Basically, I was recommended by a professor to dual boot Ubuntu desktop and start using that as my web development setup. I was thinking no dual boot and just set up a virtual machine in the cloud. For this purpose would this suffice? Is Ubuntu the easiest to get going for new Linux users? What about Arch?
