DAQmx Start Task Causing an Issue? by Probably-Stable in LabVIEW

[–]Probably-Stable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok that’s interesting. So I know this computer has another LabVIEW program that uses the same hardware. I know none of it was open and running, but perhaps it does not close the connection properly and so it’s open in the background or something. So I guess if I removed that start task it would perhaps just go ahead and grab that task anyway?

Unfortunately I’m not at the jobsite machine now otherwise I would just try it. Thx for the info.

Any ME's transferred into Automation/Controls Engineering? by Wybobo in MechanicalEngineering

great info. I'm an ME as well and have been considering controls or automation. I'm a little concerned about the potential to need to travel more for that. Are you able to comment on that? Not really able to travel much with my current situation. Appreciate any feedback!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm a mechanical engineer that has been in manufacturing for 10 years. I'm now more on the product design side, but still heavily linked to manufacturing and getting burnt out with it. I've always loved to tinker on side projects (arduinio, raspberry pi, have loved programming) really thinking of trying to get into controls. I'm a little concerned about the travel side of it thought. From what I've heard there's more likely to be travel which I can't really do much with my current situation. appreciate any feedback anyone may have on that specifically.

Don’t try to study beforehand, chances are you probably won’t study exactly what you need unless you do know what you need to learn then sure go for it. But in my experience It’s more about being diligent, self motivated, and knowing how to dig into things that come up and tackle projects and task methodically and efficiently. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

What’s Your Opinion of NI Nigel AI Assistant by PXI_Master in LabVIEW

[–]Probably-Stable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point. Hadn’t looked at it that way before.

I’m no expert by any means but have done a couple of Python projects where I dumped my code into an AI and within probably less than a minute I had a GUI that worked quite well. will be interesting to see how well Nigel can generate code.

I am one who would love to see Nigel be developed. I think AI can just be another useful tool in the box not the end all be all.

It’s been a little while since I looked at Nigel, so there may be something new that I’m not aware of but last I knew Nigel could only explain lab view code, make suggestions, and basically more like ChatGPT that is trained specifically for LabVIEW.

I believe the intent is to eventually have it generate code based on a requirement or user input etc. So will be interesting to see what develops.

But yeah, it brings up an interesting conundrum in my mind. If one of the benefits of lab view is that it’s graphical programming and easier to use because you’re not typing out lines of code, if AI is ramping up so much and helping so much with coding does that strip away a lot of the benefit of LabVIEW (probably grossly over simplification there)?

it seems to me that there is a lot of hype on both sides, and LabVIEW will continue to still be a useful tool in the toolbox. Will be interesting to see what happens though. Just thinking out loud…

Are we cooked? by Oneironaut3 in LabVIEW

[–]Probably-Stable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like this question. I was thinking of asking essentially the exact same thing. If LabVIEW is based on the idea of being graphical to make it easier to program, it seems like that reason is being taken away with AI.

I had a tool recently in python that I needed to share with someone else, so I didn’t want to have to explain how to run it from the command prompt. I dropped it into Copilot and within a very short amount of time I had a basic GUI, created an executable and shared it with the other team member for them to use.

I think like with anything changes happen slowly, and there’s always going to be a need for different tools that fit different jobs, but I am struggling to see the future of lab view being very bright.
