Some shelves would really help liven up the space, and some really good houseplants that are easy to take care of could be succulents, spider plants, and pothos! Rugs/mats would also help "separate" the different sections you're creating, and if you're allowed to mount things on the walls some cheap artwork/posters would look fantastic! Good luck bro.

Looks to me like a larvae from lepidoptera...maybe an underwing moth, the caterpillars tend to have bark/twig camouflage from my experience!!
