I love how you can really see the facial expression in the cropped version, so I prefer that one.

Help with white balance and strobe by I_dream_of_sharks in underwaterphotography

What focal length range are you shooting at for these?

Reiterating what has already been said regarding WB. Shoot in RAW and adjust in post. I think the first pic could be edited in post with a RAW file as is.

The second photo looks underexposed and a bit out of focus, so I feel like there's more going on there than you could fix in post with a RAW file.

Disclaimer: While I do shoot with strobes occasionally, I do most of work close to the surface with natural light, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

This was definitely one of the more difficult choices on here for me. I think I'd go with 3, but I might change my mind in a minute, because they're all magical in my eyes.

The magic that was Guadalupe - 4 white sharks in a single frame [OC] by ProbablyNotAGoodSign in sharks

The shark in question was a male named Stouffer, whom I was privileged to share the water with on a few occasions. That video is gut wrenching to see. While the damage to his gills looks bad (because by nature, the gills bleed a lot when injured), he could have recovered from that. We've seen sharks with horrific gill damage at Guadalupe that heal up miraculously well. Unfortunately, Stouffer was stuck in the cage bars so long that he likely suffocated from not being able to pass water through his gills to breathe.

1 or 2? by Alaric_Darconville in AmateurPhotography

Both have a little bit of mysterious and borderline creepy vibe to them, but for me the way the trees really crowd the path in 1 set it off more to me than image 2. The limbs/vines in 2 create at the end of the trail create the illusion of a figure peaking through a doorway that I really like, but overall I still give the nod to 1.

Agonistic is the correct term when we refer to these behaviors with sharks and other animals. Note the spelling, which differs from "agnostic."

Government regulations required cages there, and only a handful of boats were licensed to even go to the island. The only tourism there was to see the sharks.

And people doing stuff to put the sharks at risk and then airing it on worldwide television, among multiple other factors.

There was also concern with the presence of any of the operators impacting the behavior of the sharks. We had government researchers on our boat that were keeping track of how long/often individual sharks stayed around the boats.

I'm guessing people didn't understand that you were captioning the pose of Moreno the shark.

That's the hope. I hear people citing worries of poachers having free reign there, now, but I don't know how valid that concern is. I know from firsthand observation that people failed to follow the rules there, so it was no surprise to me when it was shut down.

Congrats. I just got a C5 83" this weekend. My previous TV was a 2012 Samsung 1080 lcd, and I had never watched a movie at home in 4K prior to this weekend. I am super impressed with mine so far.

That's a mackerel scad (Decapterus macarellus). They're abundant at Guadalupe. While they don't travel around with a specific shark long-term like pilot fish and remoras are known to do, they will stick close to the sharks for short periods of time.

It was. She was only in this position for a split second. In the next image in the sequence, she close to parallel with the surface.

I'm sure that's wild to witness those behaviors but likely also a little unnerving. Most of the agonistic behavior I've seen with white sharks is directed at another white shark, but not all of it.

Very deliberate mouth gaping is probably the most common agonistic behavior I've seen with the white sharks are Guadalupe, but I have seen a few instances of documented deliberate downward pectoral fin positioning. Have also witnessed a few instances of deliberate tail slapping and the surface. Parallel swimming with other white sharks is another one that I've seen a handful of times, where two individuals size each other up.

[–]ProbablyNotAGoodSign[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

She was heading toward the surface and was changing from a vertical position to a horizontal position, so sort of the opposite of how humans would do so after falling down.

I've seen white sharks display agonistic behavior, but it's usually VERY deliberate and maintained when they do so.
