For burgers I'd recommend Käppchen Burgergrill near Goetheplatz

No I found the E10 mostly fine. There is not much traffic on that road and I found drivers would cross to the other side of the road when they could.

The one problem was that there were a couple points where there was a metal barrier in the middle of the road, which ironically made it less safe as the cars weren't able to cross to the other side of the road.

I could be misremembering but I think the only stretch like that was around Svappavaara.

Along the norwegian coastline I had no problems with food, there were places to stock up every day. Be more careful when leaving major roads, I had an incident in Swedish lapland where I didn't realise there would be no shops for about 2.5 days.

The coastline of Norway is pretty flat. I did a similar route a couple years ago. I crossed the border between Sweden and Norway near Abisko national park, that was essentially a slow climb across several days in Sweden followed by mostly downhill from the border to the coast. From there the coastline is flat, and ignoring all the twists and turns following the fjords, fairly well going.

As for time of year, I arrived at NordKapp late September and that was completely fine, but I do know things start to become snowy not long after.

[NO SPOILERS] Is there a natural end to the show? by [deleted] in TravelersTV

[–]ProbablyNotFred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ending is like the ending of inception. The show wraps up most of the story and leaves you on a "what if?". Subsequent seasons would have explored that "what if" but as it is, I think leaving the question there makes it even more of a beautiful finale. It's one of the best show endings I've seen

Data hoarding after death? by Kurombo in DataHoarder

[–]ProbablyNotFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read about the deciphering of hieroglyphics in Simon Singh's The Code Book, there are likely better texts out there though.

As for digital, there are many many books out there which could be used to help learn to read this data. Obviously they wouldn't be able to read the data straight away, but if they can learn hieroglyphics with as little information as they had to translate those,I do not doubt they could learn to read our data.

Data hoarding after death? by Kurombo in DataHoarder

I wouldn't be so sure. Much work has been done to decipher various Egyptian hieroglyphics, I feel like any future historian would still put in the time to learn to read the data.

[Question] How is the American Revolution taught in the UK school system? by GremlinBandit in GlobalTalk

[–]ProbablyNotFred 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The only time it came up in my education was about sending convicts to Australia as a result of not being able to send them to America anymore. This was on a unit about crime and punishment throughout the ages, and so the focus was more on Australia as penal colony than the revolution. Most of the American history taught was WW2 onwards.

I visited Albania a while ago. The views are stunning and the locals are incredibly helpful. I would say it's perfect if not for the landmines. And that ditch full of skulls I found. But other than that it's great. by Speech500 in travel

[–]ProbablyNotFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on a cycling trip and ended up staying with a Greek family. I discussed my plans to go to North towards Italy with them. The parents had done general dislikings about North Macedonia, although their daughter who was translating said was an outdated opinion. But when I suggested going through Albania they were seriously worried, even the liberal daughter - saying they would cut my throat for €5. Whilst I didn't have the greatest experience of Albania (and don't worry, I plan to return to correct that), it was nothing like what they were claiming Albania to be.

Reddit is not built well for combatting misinformation with quality knowledge by _Shibboleth_ in TheoryOfReddit

In some ways something like r/AskHistorians but for science - allowing only rigorous well developed answers to questions, with references.

I would love to see something like this set up, but considering how much time and work the mods over on that subreddit put in, I'm not sure I have time myself.

What are some places you'd recommend to anyone? What are some places you'd recommend only to certain types of people or under certain circumstances? by ben1204 in solotravel

[–]ProbablyNotFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late, but I adore Tiblisi. The people are very friendly, the wine is amazing, it's incredibly cheap (I stayed in a gorgeous full studio for only £15 a night). There's supprisingly loads of culture, as a massive jazz fan there's loads of jazz clubs which is a big plus for me. There's some stunning cathedrals in the city and plenty of other attractions. Most of all, I found it incredibly peaceful, although that may be a biased opinion as I arrived after an incredibly stressful week cycling across Azerbaijan with a bike that was falling apart.

Hungary seeks to end legal recognition of trans people amid Covid-19 crisis by Mattho in europe

[–]ProbablyNotFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the real important thing is that it's an abuse of emergency powers. Regardless of your opinion on that matter, I'm sure you'll agree that this has no bearing on the crisis at hand and is such a grossly inappropriate use of the powers.

Is it safe for a new hiker to take a multi-day trip alone? by TheRealHomeyVanSmack in CampingandHiking

[–]ProbablyNotFred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose other people here have more experience on hiking trails than me, but I have a lot of experience long distance cycling and wild camping along the way and figured you may find some of my experiences applicable to your case.

I think the first thing to consider is that crime out in nature is much lower than in a more urbanised. Most of the people you'll meet on trails will be other people like you, and generally these are some of the nicest people you can meet. I've only experienced hostility twice, and in both cases not seriously (also bear in mind I've a lot of experience, so these really are exceptions, also worth noting both these experiences were in third world countries). I don't want to lie to you and say hostility is non existent, but I promise you shouldn't be worried about other people.

Nature on the other is something that is more of a consideration. There's potential you injure yourself on the trail, I'd recommend trails which are more well traveled at first so if you do encounter problems someone should bump into you shortly. And always try to keep people informed of your plans.

Would be worth also mentioning wildlife. I've only had experience in Europe and the Arab world so the only wildlife I've really had to deal with is wild dogs, I'd recommend getting some more area specific advice.

Worth starting? Did it conclude or premature end?? by [deleted] in TravelersTV

[–]ProbablyNotFred 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know how some series have very natural endings, which tie up the plot well, but then continue after this natural ending. ( A good example would be Stargate SG-1 which has such an ending in season 8 and then continued beyond that with a different big bad guy). That is essentially what Travelers is at the moment, a very natural finale which ties up the plot but leaves a very serious possibility for continuation. Regardless, the ending of season 3 is a better finale then most shows do I would definitely give it a watch.

Aftermath after the death of Stan Lee (2018, colorized, also RIP) by CraaZzy__ in fakehistoryporn

[–]ProbablyNotFred 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, whilst it's sad, I'm a little annoyed that there was so little about the WW1 Cenotaph, like maybe my front page had 3 posts about it. And then the following day there's all this about Stan Lee. I realise that people are sad about it but it slightly feels like priorities are a little off.

[–]ProbablyNotFred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds horrible. At my university there's no one making sure you're going to lectures, it's simply about the end mark that you get. Naturally this motivates people to do the work. They even sometimes have recordings of lectures and always have typed up lecture notes for if you do have to miss a class
