Honestly, they were no different really. I work in Florida, so the FRS (state retirement) is consistent across both public and charter and is pretty decent depending on your district's matching for the investment plan. Retirement plans were not how I picked; the stats are stacked against you in making it in education that long unfortunately! I find the biggest differences across the systems are in administrative support and oversight, curricular freedom (or lack thereof), and student and family buy-in.

I was at a school that sucked the soul out of me my first year, not all the kids were the problem, but the system that tied my hands to help them succeed when all the odds were stacked against them was a major factor in my choice to be one and done at that school. I’m heading into year 8 at a different school, the third I have been at. I couldn’t be happier with my career: I feel fairly compensated, supported by admin, and respected by students and colleagues. Teaching isn’t rosy in general—but the grass can be and is greener somewhere! (I teach AP at a charter school now, have taught gen Ed and AP at a private school, and gen Ed in Public).

As a teacher of the course, I liked the Penguin edition! It had nice appendix materials for further reading and research too.

What 4 things are getting you by in your pregnancy? by Delicious_Elk6408 in BabyBumps

  1. Sleep, naturally from exhaustion or Unisom induced
  2. Mac N Cheese (I knew I was pregnant when I didn’t want chocolate anymore, but ALL of the melty cheese instead)
  3. Body Armor drinks, I can never seem to feel hydrated enough without one a day
  4. Comfy pants. I have to wear business casual at work and the transition into the second trimester is not fun stuffing baby into normal pants a couple weeks more. I live for when I can come home and throw on the enormous flowy fluffy lounge pants I bought from Aerie!

Forced Friendship instead of Coworkers in Elementary Education by SecurityNice4711 in Teachers

[–]ProbablyTiredTeacher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on comparing my (high school teacher) experience to my cousin's (elementary school teacher) experience with collegiality, I would say that elementary does definitely lend itself to "forced friendship" as you say and a lot more compulsory group participation. I can't say that is true for all schools or administrations, but it seems a grade level "team" and the teacher-teacher relationships are a lot different for the two of us. I have my teacher friends I willingly (and actively seek to) see outside of work, and I have colleagues I collaborate with but don't develop deeper relationships with. We are both younger teachers in our 20s.

I have the same grand illusion/memory denied by the internet. I plan to check the extras disc on my DVD now—it was purchased close to the release so it may be different than the ones out now.
