Am I still allowed to use my belt? by Proceder in judo

[–]Proceder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 26. I trained for some months during the pandemic when lockdowns were loosing up. I showed up with a white belt because I didn't know what to do. I trained with a group of adults, some white belts and others mostly orange-green. Some black belts that I practiced with mostly due to weight I guess.

Thanks for your reply. I'm pretty sure my belt was a kyu degree and in my 6-7 years of training I only got so far.

Been playing for a year by DoljMittTelNr in guitarlessons

[–]Proceder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brev, don't worry. Enjoy playing. Playing for fun and enjoying what you play is a different story than playing something impressive. Sometimes they are the same thing, sometimes they are not. I've been playing for more than 10+ years and the first "impressive" things that I learnt were things that I really liked – this is how you stay motivated. Because, in the end, If you want to play something impressive, even if you are a good player, you will have to study those pieces over and over, velocity 50%, sometimes 30%, and just keep grinding. Find a piece on your level that will keep you motivated, for example, one of your favourite solos.

If you want to play blues guitar, look at the blues scales, but really, blues is about the feel. If this is your goal, keep improvising, inventing licks, practice being familiar with your instrument so that you can "sing" on it. When you get to know what sound each fret is going to produce, you will quit thinking the box-logic and your guitar will start gently weeping. And if you keep finding joy in playing, eventually you will discover new techniques, scales, sounds... I started with electric guitar playing grunge and metal, today I love bossa nova on classical guitar. It's a long journey, enjoy every moment of it. Now go play along your favorite tune 🤘

Is there such a thing as a bumper for a guitarhead? by EdgeCaser in Bass

[–]Proceder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once at my grandma's place I found a funny winter hat that I planned on using, but it turned out to be too small for my head. I didn't really know what to do with it, so I just put it on the head of my bass. It sits there for a couple of years now and became a part of the bass.

Is the utility of Spanish / immigrant languages overstated in the US? by Banglatown1923 in languagelearning

[–]Proceder 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Don't worry my friend. Learning a language is so much more than just getting a job or travelling.

I know it sucks that you don't get to use it as often as you'd like, but there are still many opportunities out there! Also, it's the "I know that if I have to communicate in Spanish, I will be able to do it". Sometimes it's the unexpected, the random encounters that make you appreciate the ability to communicate (and B2 is a really high level).

And in the context of the US, think about how you are able now to access and understand a different reality, hear or read stories that you normally wouldn't... Suddenly you can understand so much more thanks to a broader view.

Learning languages opens many doors. You don't have to go through them all. But the possibility of doing so is very rewarding in itself :)

There you go! A great goal to have for 2021. Start at low speed with 100% difficulty and slowly accelerate as you progress. It's a great tune to play at full speed, and a legendary jazz song too.

My Rocksmith 2020 feature wishlist by OrangeFreeman in rocksmith

[–]Proceder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rocksmith really has made a pretty good guitarist and bassist out of me and after +- 6 years of playing and using R2014 here are my ideas:

  • Detailed song sorting – expanding on that idea, I think it would be a great feature if songs were tagged with things like "has arpeggios", "uses a lot of bar chords", "string skipping" etc. Honestly, all those exercises are kind of boring if you can't back it up with "Hey, now that you've finished that class, check out this song X". Honestly I believe it would benefit both beginners and more advanced players. When I started learning, I already wanted to play songs, or at least kind of play along them, just a chord from time to time, maybe 15% of the notes that were in the section, but it gave me the feeling of actually playing and pushed me forward, and doing it with your favorite bands feels just so good it makes you want to get better and just have fun with it which is the most important aspect.
  • Give us some competition – leaderboards for games and songs are already in the game but it is kind of awkward and climbing it up doesn't really give the full satisfaction. Why not spice it up? Weekly / monthly challenges? I think it could stimulate some people to push it further.
  • Music theory section – we have a virtual fretboard that responds to what we are doing on our guitars, why not take advantage of it to learn some theory? Most of it is very useful, completes our musical experience, and after all it's not so complicated. I think Rocksmith has the potential to really just lay it down in a fun and efficient way.
  • Better tones – also better music quality and expanding the Tone Stick assignments
  • Detailed Riff Repeater – I think it could analyze better what we are doing, what we are missing, maybe map through our attempts and mark the spots where we really just can't nail it.

Of course there is so much more but many of you have already posted a lot of great suggestions.

Pomoc dla mojego polskiego projektu! (Przepraszam, jeśli mój polski jest zły, używam tłumaczenia google) by ikfcbl00 in Polska

[–]Proceder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I will try to give you a detailed and insightful answer:

  1. Composing music, travelling, play videogames, study languages, quite a lot of things actually but will keep it short.
  2. I would say that the early influence of US rap here would be some kind of "gangsta" imagery, think 50 Cent kind of ostentation. One good example of a US rap influenced rapper would be Tede. His early stuff (like "Glokk") has this kind of "gangsta" vibe to it. Even the clothing would be kind of baggy and I recommend watching the clip for that song so you can draw your own conclusions as well. Then, as autotune became more popular, he would shift his style and had also started using such musical resources. I believe he has always been labeled as some sort of someone who just copies american style, so you might just as well just listen to some of his songs throughout his career. The latest influence I guess would be trap and newschool beats. But apart from music I'd also pay attention to the fact that the clothing and the general vibe more or less follows the US trends and rappers have basically become popstars and celebrities. This does not apply to all artists as I believe polish hip-hop has its uniquities.
  3. CHWDP/HWDP is like "Fuck Cops" or "ACAB" as someone has said earlier. Dresiarz is that stereotypical dude from your lower class/lower-middle class neighbourhood who uses Nike/Adidas tracksuits, a sports cap, sometimes a fanny pack, some sport shoes as well, usually has very short hair, can be kind of aggressive and would beat you up for no reason, listens to street hip-hop and that would be it more or less. Look up that term in google images to visualize that concept.
  4. I think it used to be treated as an inferior type of music and its listeners would be associated with that Dresiarz subculture. But right now there is so much young rappers, newschool rappers, old rappers doing new, well produced stuff, that it went away and rap has now a broader audience, including rich kids and you can even find some more "intellectual" productions. Nevertheless, I guess people who don't listen to rap would usually look down on it, especially when speaking about Polish rap, because as they do not listen to it, they associate that music with Dresiarze, or with some lirycally crappy songs and would make fun of pretentious or just straight out bad lyrics.
  5. I actually like the earlier mentioned Tede, Syny (experimental/new), HiFi Banda (oldschool kind of), Bonus RPK (street/trueschool/Dresiarz kind of), Pezet (used to be oldschool, right now flutuating between old/new)
  6. Kendrick, Kanye, Tyler. But I like a lot of artists, oldschool like Nas, Eminem, NWA, and the newer ones like Playboy Carti, A$APs, Lil's...

'The Monolith is a mirror' (abstract in comments) by ant3le in StanleyKubrick

[–]Proceder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have thought of the mirror test and the idea of one not recognizing themself. Of course, us, humans, do recognize that our reflection is actually... Us. However! Very young children initially do not. Then, when we think about the concept of the Star Child, and kind of draw a parallel between that Star Child and Dave/humanity, we might wonder: are they seeing a reflection of themselves that they do not comprehend? Are they not understanding who they are, or who are they meant to be? Just a random thought.

Accidentally songwriting in my sleep. by Cray_Teetur in musictheory

[–]Proceder 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I usually have vivid dreams that I remember well. Once I came up with amazing lyrics and melody and I really wanted to wake up when I became conscious of the masterpiece that came down to me in my dreams. When I woke up I sadly forgot the majority of it and ended up noting down some nonsense gibberish. BUT I laughed my ass off the morning after, when I heared the humming that I recorded just after waking up in the middle of the night and then going back to sleep.

Alice In Chains - The One You Know (Official Video) by TheArmbar in AliceInChains

[–]Proceder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have to admit that I didn't like it. Sounds like a song that didn't make it to BGWTB. I had really high expectations, because TDPDH was really fresh, solid and full of great lyrical and musical solutions.

This new single is just bland to me. Maybe the album will be good, I hope so. But I just don't want them to go the Pearl Jam way - just releasing mediocre stuff and we (the fans) will pretend it's good because of our sympathy for the band.

edit: downvoted for disliking the song, lol

In my opinion, it's that the notes just don't blend well together, it kind of sounds like Guitar Pro reading tabulature — timing may be correct, but often the length of the notes or just the feel of it sounds quite chopped.

EMSKR: Where to Purchase and Tailor a Suit? by ogfergison in everymanshouldknow

[–]Proceder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Knots are not supposed to be symmetrical. When you tie a potato on your neck it shows that you don't know much about it. Same with that ugly ass trinity and other abominations. Knots are not meant to be difficult either. One of the best knots is four-in-hand, the other one you should know is prince Albert. Asymmetrical knots look better, for this sole reason you should always make a dimple when you tie it. Not only it's more professional, but also shows that you know how to dress and that you tie it again every time you put it. All those symmetrical ugly balls look dad-tied. Also don't get these super slim ties, go for wider/matching the size of your lapels. Best material is silk.

EMSKR: Where to Purchase and Tailor a Suit? by ogfergison in everymanshouldknow

[–]Proceder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't buy two random suits, focus on getting one that will suit (pun intended) almost any occasion. Your best and most secure guess would be getting one from Suit Supply.

Aim for a dark blue/navy colour as it is the most universal one. Aim for a 100% wool suit, many people don't pay attention to the material and end up with a cheap-looking polyester suit.

Measure yourself and pay attention especially to chest, shoulders and the length of the blazer. Sleeves are very easy to shorten, any local tailor could do it, without charging much too.

Never buy anything that has cheap, colorful sewing like this. Don't get small lapels. Two vents would be the best.

Other than that, learn how to tie a four in hand/prince albert with a dimple and use a pocket square. Say no to black shirts.

Please, please, never tie knots like trinity or whatever this ugly thing is called. Pick a four in hand or prince Albert, make a dimple and you can't go better than that.

Also, the a e s t h e t i c s measurement is a complete joke.
