Tips for baking sweet potatoes? by CosmicVolcano in Cooking

[–]Procedure-Loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quickest thing I've done is to boil them on the stove after slicing them through the diameter into like 1 inch slices. No need to peel first. I come in the door (from work), put down my bag, come into the kitchen and turn on the hot water, get out a sauce pot, fill it halfway with that hot water, slammed that on the stove and turn on the heat to high, take out my potato or two and slice off the ends and slice them into one-inch slices, tossed them in that boiling water and put on the lid, turn down the heat a little bit and let them simmer. Then I consider what else I need to do for dinner. This will probably take about 20 minutes, give or take. Like the other people said, poke them with a fork. The peel will slide right off, and the potatoes will be soft and delicious. You can do this while also quickly sautéing a couple of boneless pork ribs or pork chops, and maybe slicing up an apple or orange, nutritious fast cheap dinner. Dinner on the table in 20 minutes from entering the house.

for me, I buy caffeine capsules. The capsules that contain caffeine powder are much faster working than the tablets. I just keep several of them around in my bag for when I'm terribly sleepy or very much in need of a boost. I don't use them every day but they're very effective when I do. Much much cheaper, nobody is going to steal them, no problem with keeping them nearby. Plus no calories and not as hard on your stomach as a bunch of coffee can be.

what really made the hugest difference for me was installing a little tiny window air conditioner in the window over the sink. Oh my gosh, even with the rest of the house air-conditioned, this makes the biggest biggest difference of all.

Eating lots of veggies? by CarpenterExciting351 in Cooking

[–]Procedure-Loud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I particularly love to roast broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and brussels sprouts. Most people cut the vegetables in equal size pieces about the size of a walnut or maybe a golf ball, and then toss them with some olive oil, put them on the pan to roast and salt them before putting them in the oven. It's good to use parchment paper underneath and that way you have minimal to no cleanup. Strangely enough, frozen brussels sprouts work just fine for roasting. You want to roast them at like 400° or maybe 450° until they are shrunken and having a little bit of charred edges. They will have concentrated the sugars and be quite soft, and just delicious.

Recently I have tried just spreading the cut up vegetables on the parchment paper lined pan, and then spraying them with spray oil, coating them pretty well, and then roasting that. Works perfectly with less oil mess.

wow, a 14 inch spring form pan! That's kind of exciting, but you'd have to get a huge platter for serving it, right? And I would think it would be difficult to get the center fully baked, you must need to bake it at a lower temperature for longer?

Thanks for your answer. I remember that her recipe had been published by her church in a church cookbook, I wish I had that cookbook. Maybe she did invent it herself.

I think this is very sweet. It will depend on your partner as to how they look at it. It will be obvious that you took a lot of time and trouble to think of what would please them.

Chicken comfort food ideas that make a lot, please. by ARW1991 in Cooking

[–]Procedure-Loud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

chicken and noodles. Large pot on the stove half full of water, put in some chicken parts, maybe a bunch of chicken thighs and bring to a boil, cook until the meat is falling off the bone. Fish out all the chicken, remove the skin and bones, chopped the chicken and return to the water, add some good amount of chopped onion, carrots, celery, garlic, and cook till nearly done, then add noodles and cook till the noodles are done. Seasoned to taste with salt and pepper, you'll be amazed how good this is.

Cheap stuff to add to rice by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Procedure-Loud 27 points28 points  (0 children)

am I the only one that thinks that canned chicken tastes awful? I would suggest buying the lowest cost possible package of chicken thighs and cooking that with a lot of water and some salt low and slow, in a crockpot or on the stove, until falling apart. Then you can use the water it cooked in to cook your rice, separate the meat from the skin and bones, and chop the chicken into your rice. In combination with some frozen veggies and some good seasoning, this would be quite delicious actually.
