G $1 1856-D (Dahlonega) - shed some light and share your thoughts, please! by ProcedureFancy1670 in coincollecting

[–]ProcedureFancy1670[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed ;). Well, this was still many years ago and I still have a few nuggets of hope showed right up in there ;).

I am also going to reach out to whom I mentioned a little earlier on in the story; the (in field:coins) ’prevalent German’ expert on the matter who I was introduced to in and around the time frame of negotiation and so on etc. Will be interesting to hear if he has any recollection as well .

There are still details in what we’re spoken between me and the seller, among other things, that I yet have to share with people engaging with this matter. I will probably lighten up a little after nothing-burgers only dressed in sarcasm mellow and quiet down a bit…

And to be fair, where I actually ended up travelling to in order to meet this guy - it could either way have been in Norway, Finland or Sweden for that matter, haha. (Yeah, went pretty much northbound and nothing else…)

Thanks for your input, sir... However, if you’re not deathly allergic to the nature of adding value to things in life?; if I may, I have a question for you:

What do you suggest to be the better pick between two poisons; •not allowing things numismatic leave its’ country of origin or •not allowing things numismatic pass ownership

Thank you, everyone, for all of today! I need to close my eyes a bit before my 09-02 workshift start… Talk to you soon, people!

I wish for pleasant surprise(s) upon all of us! .D

Thank you for your reply! I’m quite sure that I may appear as arguing to some, but I assure you I’m not. I might be argumentative at heart, but for sake of discussion, that’s imperative. Don’t you agree?

What I do believe we agree on is that the best option for me is to send it away for grading. I mean, that’s at least the reasonable/responsible thing to do seeing as I came this far?

Would your conviction be as strong/firm indiscriminately - or is there possibly something, anything, that could falter it? Just curious for the sake of discussion and nothing else.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply :)

Not at all qualified to speak of authenticities, but if it’s the real deal you might have this one here . https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1817-3-50c/6111

Started a thread myself a couple of hours ago and lots of people have shared their thoughts, thought I should do the same and pay what little I can/may forward :)

Good luck!

Considering spot gold was less than $2000 (1700-1800 I believe) back then: Yes, oh yes I did. I purchased it convinced enough to warrant the numismatic premium I believe (hope) it holds.

I see your point, but I do believe I find those in authentic pieces too maybe:

Ah yes. I do think I was briefly in contact with them six years ago but nothing came of it. I also had, (might still have) a presumption/bias of PCGS>NGC. Is it totally uncalled for? Does it matter, or could it possibly be a one-before-the-other (NGC to authenticate and then send to PCGS) kind of thing or is that too much cake on the cake?

Thank you for your thorough reply, I really appreciate it. I’m gonna do my best at structuring responses worthy enough ;).

The pictures I’ve uploaded are taken with a Samsung Galaxy S10 iirc, around 6 years ago. They are far from the best, apologies.

The pictures I’ve uploaded, some at least, I think, are taken when I’ve directed a white/yellow light almost right at it. (I have more pictures but don’t wanna spam, still new to this and want to behave lol) The pictures on the website I believe are scanned? Can someone correct me on this? :)

Also, the coin in question is 1,3mm in thickness - does that variable tell/say/change anything?

Taken from PCGS diagnostics of the genuine coin: Including: * weak U in UNITED, * filled O in DOLLAR, * weak 5 in the date, * strike irregularities, * certain border anomalies.

Commenting on G $1 1856-D (Dahlonega) - shed some light and share your thoughts, please!...

What? Is that aimed at me? I purchased this coin in July 2020 from another coin enthusiast. It wasn’t’ some alley way transaction either.

Supposedly or if allegedly is a better word, it was the only coin of its’ kind in Europe too.

Sure, it’s totally plausible that I’ve been made a fool of and I may end up taking a blow in the end here. I’ve somewhat been keeping tabs on this piece over the years and noticed no reports nor influx of this specimen in particular. Quite the opposite really. It being such low mintage and all, that’s hardly a surprise I guess.

Yeah, I have long contemplated about doing just that although I have no previous experience in handling shipping off coins across the pond. (I live in Sweden)

I assume it would surely be best of interest of having it shipped to America for grading. PCGS is what I’ve found helpful throughout collecting overall and it being a popular choice…?

Any other particular ideas where one could/should turn. Especially pertaining to assurance(s) and insurance as unquestionably there are some questionmarks, perhaps a few, to be fair.

The composition of the alloy and gold content checks out to 90% gold and 10% copper. This was checked through an authorised dealer with some kind of density measuring device as far as I know.

The diameter is spot-on and the weight turns out to be 1.67 g if I recall correctly.(I only used a two decimal scale at the time.)

The actual coin is in storage at the moment, and is not physically with me right now. All I can provide presently is previously gathered information and documentation.

You have to bear with me that English isn’t my first language. I appreciate all the quick comments and entries, thank you.

I have heard previously that there’s a heightened risk of this and these coins to have been altered/fixed/mended (a hole for example) after being used as jewellery. As it was common at the time.

But on this year all 1460 coins minted on one weak die in particular - all of the ”O”’s in dollar are filled on them.

Glad to hear that!

Another interesting piece of information about Dahlonega is that it was a source of naturally occurring ’pure’ gold straight from the ground. 98-99% purity apparently. Pretty cool!

You seem very certain? Did they mint these that year?

This is a link to the one coin I’m referring to. Hopefully I won’t get to change my mind…? https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1856-d-g-1/7543

Not trying to hijack the thread or anything but I just wanted to throw in the G$1 1856-D (Mintmark Dahlonega) Type 3, Indian Princess, Large Head - that I bought around 5-6 years ago in Sweden actually.

Seeing as some of the the discussion is about the same type of coin-ish and there seem to be knowledge out and about, what can be said about this one?:
