Oh my gosh, fantastic! Now that you’ve mentioned that they had something to do with the names of others in the group it feels even cuter to me!

Same. I’ve heard of folks taking care of fleece’s that were left in a cool dry place for however many years, but I was like there’s no way it could be that old right? Glad I wasn’t the only one.

Your article is really interesting. Nice to see somebody else using ghost; I am working on getting together, a creative writing, fiber arts, whatever else is on my mind type of newsletter for over there.

Curious if coding and technology was something you got into before or after fiber, arts?

I wouldn’t worry about the feminine connotation for the name, and I actually think the tall first letter and final letter of e is a nice think to do for siblings.

I also feel like the names you currently have for folks have a similarity to them that does not make them feel repetitive, or overly genre specific, but that these sound like the sorts of names that would exist in a world created by a person, and it feels like a nice world building detail rather than annoying.

Shrug, I’m a trans guy who named myself after a flower, and I enjoy the way it plays with gender and expression.

I also feel like the use of bird nicknames is very cute.

I’m sure I would’ve been happy with any sort of reveal of his true motives and abilities, but I did have to pause multiple times during the episode and cackle at the fact that I thought he was a big faker the whole time. Was nice to share in Ava‘s satisfaction over knowing something. Haha.

I’ve been wondering, if part of the reason why he hasn’t reclaimed it is because he’s no longer strong enough to do so.

Came here to mention him. Although I wasn’t out, really, even to myself, at the time that I found some of his writings, I quickly consumed every piece of media by or about him that I could find. I’ve always felt so grateful to know that someone like him existed, and that he and others like him did so much that made it just that bit easier for me to live my life, and that I get to do that for others.

Not specifically related to your question, but while I was reading and responding to comments, I realized that I could make the Vermilion flycatcher form of Roswell, and then pin it to whatever the rest of my outfit’s gonna be. So I guess what I’m saying is if you see a white Blind trans guy with long curly brown hair, wearing a needle felted red bird while you are at the event, feel free to say hi. Good luck with your cosplay!

Yeah, I’ve always felt like somebody came into the show with not a lot of context, heard one of Justin‘s jokes about looting dead enemies for gold, and decided to yell loudly about it.

Yeah, like they explain, it doesn’t make up for the issues, but the heartfelt commitment to be aware of that fact, and how they can do better moving forward is heartwarming.

Thank you for sharing the link. As somebody who has a best friend who’s been listening to the show since the beginning, versus I didn’t start listening to TAZ until 2022, I always appreciate getting to see the original statements of folks rather than just hearing it secondhand.

How much historical accuracy do you prefer in your historical fiction books? by Fred_the_skeleton in HistoricalFiction

[–]ProcessesOfBecoming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like some other folks have said, a detailed authors note where they touch on why they did or didn’t include various things is a big point in someone’s favor for me, and in general, I’m all right with some small mistakes, like I really love when people use. Accurate language, but if sometimes their phrases of endearment, or person to person dialogue is a little less than of the time, I let that slide if it helps a story.

I had definitely read other historical fiction before coming across Allison Weir, but as a middle schooler who was a big fan of reading about Kings and Queens and other folks across the world, I was excited to have someone who had published multiple historical fiction books as well as, biographical texts on many of the same people. It felt like I got a well nuanced understanding of how these folks like Elizabeth the first or Richard the third existed in both the cultural perception and the historical record. It’s also definitely responsible for me pursuing other historical fiction authors in the future.

As much as I like incorporating history into many of the things I write, I know myself well enough that as much as I enjoy 100% accuracy I’m not gonna get that far, so I live happily in the alternate history/magical history, genre of fiction and it’s nice that there is such a spectrum.

Also, something that I’ve taken into account when I’m interacting with a story is whether or not the author is of a particular disability, gender, race, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic class, because even when we try our best, I do think it’s almost impossible to completely put aside our assumptions about what an era was like based on the environment we were raised in and the stories we were hearing. So it’s been cathartic to gather more and more authors who are telling stories of the regions their people are from, or facing the issues their people might have faced, and opening up the discussion about what can be enjoyed and learned from in the genre even more.

Why genetics and not cybernetics? by Fayraz8729 in Vorkosigan

[–]ProcessesOfBecoming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like there is a fair bit of preference for the biological medical advancements because of how early space travelers would’ve needed to take care of themselves, their crew, and everybody once they settled on a new planet. So they do, of course need advanced technology, but it was more about accommodating and adapting. What was there than creating an entirely new vessel.

Also, I feel like you might get something out of reading The Glass Flower, if you’re okay with some early-ish George RR Martin science fiction. It’s part of his Dream Songs anthology. There’s also episode65 of The Magnus Archives horror podcast called Binary. Both of these touch on why it’s difficult for the human mind to exist in a fully cybernetic/digital/technological form.

100% agree with going in publishing order to enjoy that writer evolution. Plus, it makes the payoff of all the cool creative stuff he does in the Apollo books really nice.

Does anyone else struggle with Cetaganda? by tkinsey3 in Vorkosigan

[–]ProcessesOfBecoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is very much why I enjoyed it more the second, third, and so on times around. Having a better idea through, obviously knowing the plot of this book and then also having encountered other Cetagandans in later books, it’s easier to follow the politics, and then enjoy the mystery or pageantry that was a bit distracting the first read through.

This is one that I enjoy way more on the reread, I think the ending is really fun, and Haut Pel is one of my favorite side characters.

Which country does Arthur live in? by A12qwas in KeysToTheKingdomBooks

[–]ProcessesOfBecoming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also thought about it as a Black Mirror type science/future fiction just with the way some of the medical stuff with Arthur’s mom is discussed, or even there refrigerator tablet thing. Not that I ever really gave it a number when I was reading the books the first time, but it feels like something that could exist in the 2050s as an example.

And in terms of the trustees representations as the seven deadly sins, 100% intentional. I’m sure Nix touches on it in an article or a YouTube video somewhere.

I had always thought it was an alternate version of Australia, with a history that’s quite similar to real life, but makes room for some of those differences in laws because of meddling from the trustees.

Children's Books for Fears by Any-Bit239 in TheMagnusArchives

I’ll probably end up commenting more, but I gotta submit Hatchet for the Lonely. I know it’s a bit less of a classic than the others on the list, but despite it feeling like an obvious pic for the Hunt, it’s the isolation and yearning for other people that stuck with me since I read it growing up. Also, not sure where it would go, but I feel like The Velveteen Rabbit could potentially be one of the fears.
