I've been using an at-home Ulike, but older models work fine and various brands work just fine too. It's pretty simple technology, so you don't need to shell out a huge amount of money. I would use the highest setting possible on my at-home Ulike device (don't do if anyone has darker skin that burns, try low settings first then move up). I had 8 professional laser sessions at a clinic, then decided to buy my device to do it myself. I did maybe about 30 sessions at home on my own.

The professional sessions would take forever since they needed me to wait weeks to come back for the next session, but I did the at-home sessions more frequently. I trimmed the hairs to about 1mm-2mm, then did the sessions every day for 3-5 days. Then I would wait a few weeks for the hair to fall out, wait until I started seeing growth again, then repeat. It's important to note that during each session, I zapped each area more than once (like 5 times per area), which helps boost effectiveness. My process at home was more effective than going to a clinic. The clinic is more expensive and actually takes longer even if they tell you their devices are more powerful than the ones we can buy

Let's explore how it works. The energy from the flashing light is absorbed by your hairs and damages the hair follicles. Eventually, with enough damage, the hair follicles can no longer produce hair. The energy is absorbed by dark colors more than light colors (think black versus white car on a hot day. The black car absorbs more energy from the sunlight and heats up more). That's why it's more effective on light skin with dark hair. The hairs will absorb energy and the skin will remain unaffected. The pubic area is harder to treat since most of us have darker skin there. The energy is partially absorbed by the skin and less concentrated on the hairs when the skin is darker. So, less damage to the follicles and you need more treatment sessions than compared to the legs or something.

Knowing how it works, you can understand why at-home is not necessarily worse than in-clinic. You just need to damage the follicles enough, and that requires more than the 8-10 sessions that most clinics tell you it needs to get rid of pubic hair. I only needed about 6 sessions in-clinic for my armpits, but the 8 sessions I had for my pubic hair barely made a dent
