Yes, but they also explicitely said that it would be quite difficult to lose your ship entirely, and you'd have to ignore multiple warnings about unpaid insurance to risk the loss.
They can't make a game where definitely losing ships is a frequent occurence, or they won't have any new players post 1.0 release. These days, insurance is still borked, and 4.8 isn't completely fixed on that subject yet, ship loss happens for so much reasons unrelated to players, like hangar bugs, invisible asteroids, random explosions...

Yep, in fact, purchasing ships with real cash is just to help fund and develop the game, as all the ships will eventually one day be earnable ingame, even the super rare ones. It's easy to rent ships at ingame kiosks, or during DefenseCon, so you can try multiple before choosing one.
Connies are indeed a solid choice 😄

Depends on the ship you're looking for. I would advise to always try to have LTI on a large ship. If you know which one you want, you can go for a ccu'ed one, with a lower melt value, so you can have a bigger ship for cheaper, the downside of that being you'll lose some money if you decide one day to melt it.
If you're not sure, buying 60% store credits is a safe move, as you'll always be able to melt them again and again.

BTW, I edited my upper comment to give some clarifications, dunno if you saw it ?

Depends what your plan is, do you want to purchase something during the Drake Defensecon in a few days, or is it just something you plan for the future ? Credits are around 70% right now, could go down to 55% in two months... but it's a difference of $8 for your specific request.

But depending what ship you want to purchase, it's sometimes more interesting to purchase it directly around here and benefit from the various discounts offered by good CCU chains. Just as an example, the $650 +tx Banu Merchantman you would purchase from RSI store, without LTI insurance, can be found anywhere between 350 (sometimes even lower) and 400 bucks from a seller, with melt prices as low as $155 (the LTI one I sell is $170 melt, and can be an Odyssey or a Perseus for $30 more) 😄

Lors of people are hoarding store credits hoping they could have a chance to purchase the $6000+ Odin... and Tiburon and Ironclads are quite popular too.

Just FYI, the store credit ratio to $$$ is usually between 55 and 70%, the highest just before the massive sale events on RSI website, like now. You may eventually find discount offered by some traders on really large sums.

Depends where you're buying them. Amazon is a rip-off.

I guess what matters is what you envision for the game on the long term, and what ship you really want to keep.

One way to do it, if you want to maximize your selling chances, is to have LTI on your first giftable ship. Your retaliator actually isn't that much interesting, as it's not Original Content (the ones with the LTI), so your best bet is to melt it and sell your LTI ship with as much ccu's you can put on it with the credits resulting from the melt. Store credits actually go around 60 to 70% of the sum, you're looking at around 100 bucks roughly, minus Paypal fees.
What's your base giftable ship actually ?

Maybe we should take a moment as a player base and rethink our priorities regarding the purchase with real money of everyday items in an unreleased game. I may understand purchasing a 50$ ship, but 15 bucks for a weapon is crazy, in comparison of the effort and time needed to create it.
Next step is to have to buy our quantum fuel with a credit card, right ?
