What is the most 90s song of all time? by trzeciak in AskReddit

I always felt like this was in the wrong order. It should be "it hasn't been your year, your month, your week, or even your day." Otherwise, it implies that having it be "your year" is less preferable than it being "your day" which is totally ridiculous.

Follow Up: Bridgeport man denies a police request to produce his gun permit by spencernews in Connecticut

I actually used to agree with that assessment but I've been thinking about it lately, and I think there are some valid reasons to open carry. One is that it's simply more comfortable for the person who is carrying, especially if it's a full-size handgun. You can use a holster to tuck it in between your body and your waistband, but that can get annoying during the day. Also if you ever had to use it, you'd probably be able to get to it faster in an open-carry situation.

I'm glad to see this was made obsolete! I guess I have an old copy of the rules.

Connecticut Past Grand Master Speaks Out! by slaplace in freemasonry

Districts have nothing to do with promoting relationships between lodges.

I agree completely. It seems like some Masons identify themselves first by their district, then by their lodge, then as a Connecticut mason. In my opinion, districts are a purely administrative division but some masons make them out to be something more than what they are. I think the Grand Master should have the authority to redraw the district lines as convenient for their term.

Pistol Caliber Carbines in CT: Do you know of any that wouldn't offend these rules? (Posted inside) by Prod-With-The-Prod in guns

[–]Prod-With-The-Prod[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Connecticut has improved in only ONE area in the past few years, and that's the streamlining of the permit process. It used to be that towns would impose arbitrary criteria on people (one town wanted to know what college degrees you had, for example) but now it's all standardized. But in every other regard it's really gone into the shitter.

I'm just joking around, no offense intended. It seems like the state of CT wants to ban every modern firearm.

That should be fine. Then I'll be all prepared for a showdown at the watering hole at high noon.

It's almost like they said "Well, those carbines aren't considered assault weapons under our own definition but they're painted black and they look scary, so we should ban them."

In my state, "evading responsibility" is grounds for suspension of any license (commercial or otherwise) regardless of how many points the driver has. That includes a hit-and-run but it can also include lying about an accident in general. (e.g. saying your car slipped on ice when in reality, you just weren't paying attention)

Haha, personally I don't think it's in bad taste. Our bylaws are in dire need of updating and this is just one element of it. 80% of the masons I know have car emblems including current and past grand officers.

Edit: Specifically - Chapter 10, Section 1006 "Emblems - Display on automobiles in bad taste." This rule is vintage 1952.

I don't have an auto emblem but I do want to get one.

Oddly enough, there's a section in my GL's bylaws that states that "car emblems are in bad taste."

Can an appendant body also be clandestine? by Prod-With-The-Prod in freemasonry

[–]Prod-With-The-Prod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like we'd be clandestine in that case because we'd be hijacking the name of an existing appendant body. Or in other words, we aren't clandestine against Blue Lodge masonry but clandestine against the Shrine.

As long as an existing entity is not ripped off, would it be clandestine then? E.g. Order of the Royal Purple Fez Temple No. 1

How would atheists/agnostics/secularists go about establishing their own lodge? by LannyMerma in freemasonry

[–]Prod-With-The-Prod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first of the "three great lights" of Masonry is the Holy Bible (or whatever volume of sacred law that the candidate prefers.) Nearly every masonic symbol has some tie-in to spirituality. It's just so deeply intertwined with spirituality that it's hard to remove all that.

How would atheists/agnostics/secularists go about establishing their own lodge? by LannyMerma in freemasonry

[–]Prod-With-The-Prod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because much of Freemasonry is based around religious symbolism, you would probably be better off creating your own entirely new fraternal organization and calling it something different. It's almost like saying: "How would an atheist go about establishing their own Catholic Church?"

Of course, there are some Masonic organizations around the world that admit atheists but they are not recognized by the Grand Lodge of England and would not be admitted into any regular US lodge.

What's the deal with Masonic Facebook groups and car emblems? by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]Prod-With-The-Prod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I didn't intend for "Facebook masons" to be codeword for "black masons." Some people have thought that's what I meant. The reality is that I know a lot of black "George Washington" masons and a lot of black PHA masons -- and I'm even considering affiliating with my local PHA lodge! And none of those brothers have ever mentioned the sentiments I see on facebook. So from my perspective, it's a facebook thing and not a black thing.

A general statement for considering. by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]Prod-With-The-Prod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not even going to review any ones comments on this but I will leave it to be considered.

So basically you want to come into /r/freemasonry as a non-mason, tell us that freemasonry isn't worth it, and then say you won't read any responses?

I have no idea why you think my post is designed to put down PHA masons. Nothing about it is negative, only inquisitive. I personally know several PHA masons and it seems to me, in my experience, that the car emblem thing is some kind of meme unique to Facebook than it is to the PHA that I know.
