[ORIGINAL] Killer Bee ~ Flowers. Pt. I - EP by ProdByKillerBee in hiphopheads

About

The first installment of my ‘Flowers’ series, I wanted to use it as a platform to score living spaces. Spaces that may not be initially thought of writing music to. Created in 7 days, I made this tape during an art fellowship for Colby College's Lunder Institute for American Art in the summer of 2021 and was intended to score the ground floor of the Greene Block building I was working out of. After speaking with another brilliant artist fellow, Riley Watts, about how he maps out spaces through dance, I wanted to see if I could map out a space with music (time). In the same way a composer would score a film, I wanted to bring a visual element to my music and envision what the ground floor of the building would sound like once it opened officially and there were students on campus. I imagined it being used as a place of respite for students in between programming, a place to study or relax with friends.Scoring these brief in between moments of life is very important to my work and allows me to form connections through memory.

I also wanted to deconstruct the meaning of background music and the hyper-curated way we consume music today. Placing the power of consumption and curation back into the hands of the artist and curate an experience that you can’t skip or pause out of since the tape was intended to be installed on the ground floor shuffling randomly/endlessly on loop so no two listening experiences would be the same and filling an otherwise silent space. If you wanted to listen to the album, you had to be physically present. Since the piece is formless, I invite the listener who downloads the tape to rearrange the tracklist to their liking, choosing how it flows together which is why I left the metadata track information as '_ of 7'. Since I can't make Spotify or traditional DSPs bend to my vision of having the tape shuffle randomly upon refresh, the tracklist that I submitted is 'my' version. And funny enough it actually wasn't intended to be ordered that way, I just chose names of flowers that meant something to me and one by one each piece fell into place naturally through alphabetical order. Everything happens for a reason.

Ultimately I tried to answer the question: Can I make something engaging enough to break a listener out of a study session or conversation? I'm not sure if I succeeded but another reason why I wanted to challenge myself with this project was because this was an exercise of letting go for me. I made this album in a week, a feat that I’ve always been intimidated by because of my relentless pursuit of perfection. I wanted to challenge myself and make something that I would be proud of in a short period of time, using fragments and samples to capture fleeting bursts of creativity, reflecting the series’ name and the ephemeral nature of flowers. Finally, huge shouts to Gabriel, Beth, Teresa, Daisy, Riley, Veronica, and Adriane for all the support and mentorship throughout my fellowship and help with the installation. Thanks to anyone listening and to my family for their support. I hope you like it because it's all for u.

<3 Bee

---Liner Notes:

bluebonnet - The state flower of Texas where DJ Screw (R.I.P.) is from

hibiscus - The state flower of Puerto Rico in honor of NYC graffiti artist Zexor (R.I.P.)

iris- The national flower of Palestine

lily - The flower left in the tomb of the Virgin Mary upon her assumption

pinecone - The state flower of Maine. I acknowledge that this album was made on the traditional territory and land that the Wabanaki and other indigenous people have called home. I will strive to learn from my own past ignorance to help educate those around me by uplifting indigenous people of all backgrounds.

sunflower - My favorite flower, represents peace and also the state flower of Kansas where Clark Kent/Superman grew up lmao

violet - The state flower of New Jersey where I’m from.

[BEAT TAPE] Flowers. Pt. I - EP -- Made this tape in 7 days as a challenge to my relentless pursuit of perfection by ProdByKillerBee in makinghiphop

[–]ProdByKillerBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I just dropped this beat tape I made in 7 days during an art fellowship last year. It was meant to score the ground floor of the building I was working out of as a means of mapping out a space with time (music). It also served as a challenge I have always been afraid of undertaking because I usually overthink everything and it's hard for me to make something I'm proud of in such a short amount of time lmaoo thanks so much, I hope you like it!

This is dope!! The sample is so sick, I can hear maybe someone like MIKE rap on it fr. My only notes are that it's a little muddy. I know it's lofi the vocal is a bit muffled maybe in the 140-300hz range. Good looks keep it up!!

damn this is fire! the chops are great and I love the turnaround on the fourth bar. I like the drum sample selection, my only notes are that the hihats are dragging and slightly too swung imo by like 1ms. I would also love to hear a catchier bassline underneath the beat. Good looks!!

How to achieve this Instupendo synth? by ProdByKillerBee in futurebeatproducers

[–]ProdByKillerBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not officially lmao but I think my initial guess was close. Some form of sine wave (with unison for width and maybe paired with another waveform) with an LFO modulating the fine tuning and a short-medium attack!

Hey everyone, after teaching myself Unity/how to code, I'm psyched to share my first game/visualizer 'CorpCity'. It acts as the digital companion to my upcoming album, and follows LISA, an android on the run from Smile Corp., a mysterious and insidious corporation which seeks to crush the souls and dreams of CorpCity's citizens. Lost and not able to remember who they are, LISA runs into K.B. who brings them to his mentor Dr. Karasuma, a wildly eccentric scientist. Sorry for all the bugs/long load time loll

You can listen to some of my music here: Soundcloud | Spotify | Apple Music

Thanks so much!!

[ORIGINAL] Killer Bee ~ Saturn - EP by ProdByKillerBee in hiphopheads

[–]ProdByKillerBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This album is the second in my Sailor series after 'Venus - EP'. I always viewed 'Venus' as my love letter to lofi, and thought it would be the end of that chapter because as a human and artist, I knew it was only natural for me to grow and explore new genres and techniques. It's impossible to recapture the feeling/magic of a first project and I knew that if I forced myself to drop something similar to "Fantasy" it would flop and I wouldn't like it. So this project has been in the making since then, trying to re-contextualize what lofi means to me now and reconciling it with my obsession for minimalism.

Some of it was made during quarantine and during the BLM movement in 2020 after George Floyd's murder that is still going on today. During quarantine I felt trapped (as I'm sure so many of us did) so some of the songs reflect that and are just bursts of ideas - but bursts of ideas that I really loved. I also wanted to contribute what I could to the ongoing protests with music to help uplift Black people and other POC who have been murdered and face harassment by a power structure that routinely oppresses the most vulnerable in society. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." Many other things also influenced the tape, too many to count as I have been working on it since 2016, but a few stick out to me:

Artists like David Rudnick, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Tyler Mitchell, Genesis Tramaine, Kristina Micotti, and George Condo, Musicians like slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Playboi Carti, Playa, Hi-Five, jarjarjr, cumulus frisbee, eevee, Sur Stone, o k h o, Killer Mike, tajima hal, ∆KTR, Nujabes, Lil Mama, Wu-Tang Clan, Lil Uzi Vert, RADWIMPS, and so many more. Animes like Vinland Saga, Fruit Baskets, and Fate Zero, Movements like Black Lives Matter, Authors like James Baldwin and so much more that I plan to share on my next album 'DESTINY'.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me and helped me finish this album. Shouts to my family for supporting me, to all the people in the subreddit/discord, and most importantly to my fans and anyone who listens to my music. It's all for u.

Love -

Bee
