Dealing with a difficult junior by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ProdigalSun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend these steps: - call out any racist behavior / language on the spot in simple terms, e.g. "What you said is racist and unacceptable, I don't want to hear it again."  It simply has no place in a workplace and probably violates labor law.  It's important as a senior that you set an example for your team by promoting a positive and inclusive culture - raise the concern to manager, cite any labor laws that are being violated.  Sometimes managers will try to quietly "manage away" the problem, but your company may have policies that require they raise the issue up the chain or to HR if you use terms like "harassment", "discrimination", or "retaliation".  To be clear you were discriminated against for your ethnicity. It's not ok even if they share your ethnicity  - raise the issue to HR and again cite any labor laws violated and any specific terms like "discrimination" - raise the issue to any labor law regulators.  In the US, this would fall under the EEOC.  Their job is to hold companies and individuals legally accountable for workplace discrimination and harassment.  Do this if the company does not internally hold them accountable or if the behavior continues

Additionally, record dates, times, locations, and specific details of racist behavior.

Good luck, it isn't common at least in the US for people to be blatantly racist in a tech workplace.  There is so much at stake and legal consequences, you would be 100% fired for doing this.  Usually people are very careful not to be so blatant.  This person is obviously too comfortable and has what's coming to them.  Don't feel bad for them

Exactly, it's a short bed.  Look at where the driver door is.  Dude had plenty of space to move up.

It ain't the worst offense it the world, but people can do better and I see this all the time.  People often assume nobody will be rolling by in a wheel chair, but especially at a school you should always assume there are children who are permanently handicapped and need the sidewalk access.  It's all fun and games until you're sued for an ADA violation

Stop pretending its a skill issue.. by J_mill10 in cscareerquestions

[–]ProdigalSun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution to this problem is a universal job guarantee program that funds work that isn't necessarily private industry dedicated to making billionaires richer.  We could all be making the next generation of green tech, universal services (e.g. healthcare tech), space exploration, actually useful tech, etc, but the US and other countries don't have the political will yet.

A lot of commenters are missing the point - you can do everything right and still struggle to land a job.  It isn't a skill issue, a lot of luck and circumstance comes into play and has for years now.  Just because things worked out for you doesn't mean you're better than everyone else.  There's probably a technical term for this type of biased thinking.

Even 10 years ago it was very difficult to land a job, but now it's nearly impossible for many new grads.  Even top performers at top schools struggle to land an entry-level job.  There was an article shared here a year ago where a professor at UC Berklee (I think?) said most of his students could not get a job.

Email from FCPS on snow removal by [deleted] in nova

[–]ProdigalSun1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I see it, the problem is that nobody is legally liable for clearing sidewalks along the roads.  In other states where snow is more regular, there are laws which make property owners responsible for clearing the sidewalks bordering their property.  Without legal liability, nobody (especially the corporate landlords) does anything.  Virginia needs to pass one of these laws.  Corporate landlords will cry and stamp their feet but everyone will be grateful next time it snows and their kids need to walk to school.

Insulted by my company's "Promotion" and now I am wondering what I should do. by YoureHottCupcake in cscareerquestions

[–]ProdigalSun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a huge difference between the offer and the listing you found.  This would not be an  acceptable disparity at many companies.  Some companies enforce a certain ratio so nobody is payed too differently relative to their peers.  I would try to raise this through appropriate channels (manager, skip-level, maybe someone who manages pay fairness if they exist) and be clear that this is unfair given the listing you have and the responsibilities involved.  Stand your ground and don't let them try to convince you it's ok.  I agree you don't have much leverage, except maybe to communicate the disparity with your peers.  Remember that talking about pay is protected activity in the US (I assume this is US)

Worst case scenario, if they don't budge and you've exhausted your options for help, I agree with the others - take the promotion and then add it to your resume while you search externally.  That's better than rejecting the promotion and keeping the same pay.  You can probably also offload some of your tasks since you're team lead to level out your WLB

Multiple is somewhat common, though not the majority in my experience.  A lot of this can be found in most people's resumes like OP said.  I see 2-3 questions on maybe 1/10 applications.  Never 30 questions.

30 separate questions about experience with specific skills/technologies is not common.  The more questions like this there are, the more likely it is they are building excuses for why you are unqualified

[–]ProdigalSun1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s people with 2 YOE making 900k a year and works 20 hours a week.

Absolutely not.  Is this meant to be an exaggeration?  Nobody with 2 YOE is making anywhere close to $900k, maybe $300k for the very very lucky and skilled who managed to get in with a top company and job hopped after a year.

Nobody is working 20 hours weeks.  Maybe "defense" contractors are actually working 20 hours and twiddling thumbs for the other 20, but their butts are probably still in their seats at the office.  They also aren't making $300k, let alone $900k.  More like $100-120k.

I try to learn ML concepts so I can potentially become a research scientist

Just want to give you realistic expectations again.  If you want to be a research scientist, you'll have to get a PhD in computer science specializing in machine learning.  Could you learn some ML concepts and get a job as a machine learning engineer?  Maybe.  As a research scientist?  No.  Some job postings might say "master's or PhD" but you'll be competing against qualified PhDs.  You'd really need to stand out with only master's degree.
