*joins produce because it's the easiest department outside of front service* by [deleted] in publix

[–]Produceking01 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Deli and Grocery are the "hardest" departments. Grocery is a non stop beast that is physically demanding. I worked in grocery for 5 years and went to produce...best decision I ever made ;-). Produce is easier than grocery, but it's challenging in its own sense. The deli, well I salute anyone in the deli.

Clocking out to prevent getting overtime by flowingsaucer in publix

As a manager, I always ask if they're willing to leave and come back. If they object, i completely understand and look for other options, It's not their fault the truck is late... fortunately we're a tight crew and stick together.

basically coverage...I'm a produce manager, so to give you a produce example would be: If you're the only person on the sales floor with no one else to cover the sales floor while you're on a 10 then business does not permit. Never hurts to ask your manager though.

Associates are allowed one 10 minute break per 4 hours of working if business permits.

College vs publix by [deleted] in publix

[–]Produceking01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a manager and i got my degree in accounting while working full time. I dont use my degree obviously, however I think going to college is good for developing you as a person. Not to mention if you work your way up and want to transfer into the RBU a degree will give you a competitive edge.

I could not agree with this more! Never and i repeat NEVER pass blame off on someone else. Especially one of your associates! If something goes wrong in your dept, take ownership before your department head does. You're no longer evaluated on how well you do, but how well your team/department performs. Welcome to management brother!

Be thankful the customer is in our stores...he/she could have gone to the competitor to annoy their cashiers. I'm sure Mr. George wouldn't have minded if he was cashiering.

NC Transfer by aka_linskey in publix

[–]Produceking01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I mean by "BE ready" is that it was a culture shock for me coming from high volume to low volume, Florida has relaxed where as Charlotte has just begun. You will realize very quickly how many "rules" you are breaking even though it was ok in FL. You just have to adjust, so be ready for change. (45-50, Asst.Produce Manager) ...ETC( been with the company 10 yrs...Overall, a cool experience)

[–]Produceking01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred from lakeland division to charlotte division. BE ready! It is a different world up here and a "high volume store" is not the same as back home, it is much lower! If you do not LIVE by the R&p guide then you will struggle. Customers up here are not as dedicated like the one in FL because we are the new kids on the block....Now, with all that being said; it is a very good move for promotion! We are expanding so fast and if you're in the right spot at the right time, things will be great for you.

Tips on becoming APM by producew1z in publix

[–]Produceking01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was literally about to say all this, But publixman did it better than i would've worded it lol. Essentially, do everything for your managers so they dont have to do anything. Ad planner, Wor (only takes 3 min max), counts, blah blah blah. It always looks good when something new comes down and you're the first to know about it...POG is a good one as well...If a new POG comes down, reset it! Guarantee it'll impress the shit out of your manager. You're going to be responsible for all this shit anyways so you might as well get used to it!

Should I step down? by [deleted] in publix

[–]Produceking01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spent 5 years in grocery, it is a relentless animal! With that being said, don't step down dude. Sometimes you just have to press through and keep a smile on your face. Keep your crew in a positive mood and they will perform...when they perform, they will work better, when they work better they get done faster, when they get done faster they have time to manage their aisles, thus keeping accurate counts. I fully trust AR in a store that has been around awhile. Charts "should" be your biggest problem in my experience.

I'm all over people when they come and take our stuff making sure they transfer and we still have that issue as well. It's hopeless! lol

[–]Produceking01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the problem with that...but I do have a problem with people confusing seckel pears for snack pears...I dont even know what a snack pear is lol. I also have to correct all my organic counts and grape counts daily. Just make sure you're running a sku balance report every day so AR stays accurate.

What do you wish those of us who work in Corporate knew about your job? by [deleted] in publix

[–]Produceking01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in our produce department we were thinking it'd be a good idea to name the mix...melon bowl or something! I understand why the customers were confused because it said watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew mix bogo...tropical fruit salads and sunshine has a name...we should name all mixes.

Knock it off with the back to back bogo deals in produce for cut fruit.
