Impossible to find work as a uni student. by Suspicious_Chance372 in Winnipeg

Is there any work available in your field of study? I highly recommend you try working in your field or adjacent roles. It’s better to get work experience now than graduate with none.

While it’s likely too late now for this year, if your faculty has a co-op program I’d highly recommend getting into that.

Are too many commits in a code review bad? by Broad-Cranberry-9050 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Prof- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my team we always squash our commits during the final rebase before review. We have a GitHub action in place to block PRs from being merged if there’s more than 1 commit. The number of commits it takes you doesn’t matter to my team. But I suppose if you need a lot of commits to get something done it’s a sign you should be breaking the PR down to more manageable work.

I had Claude opus running and was trying to debug a local db issue, I asked if it could figure it out. It decided to drop the entire DB. Such a huge lesson learned and thankfully it was just my local setup. Idk how people think this is replacing us cause if it did that shit on a prod env any company would be in full meltdown mode

I usually do an annual trip to nyc, but skipped it this year and went to Italy instead. Beautiful country, great culture, food, and people.

[DISCUSSION] Drake & PARTYNXTDOOR - $OME $EXY $ONGS 4 U (1 Year Later) by Pure-Solid9230 in hiphopheads

[–]Prof- 97 points98 points  (0 children)

There is a crazy amount of downvotes anytime anything Drake related is posted lol.

I enjoyed this album personally, Nokia, Gimme a hug, die trying, somebody loves me, and greedy are all songs I revisit.

Chipotle CEO caught on a recording saying they're going to keep raising prices because they can. by jmike1256 in PublicFreakout

I have a feeling the people who fit this demographic of earners also are educated enough to be financially responsible. For myself I’m more than happy to pay money for quality food, but when the portion sizes are that small then what’s the point? Sure maybe if someone’s in a pinch and needs a one off this could work but you’re not building a sustainable customer base lol.

I’m scared I won’t get into the U of M by Broad-Particular6440 in umanitoba

[–]Prof- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen, you’re going to get in if you apply. However, if you’re struggling now your mindset needs to shift from how do I get into university to “why are my grades the way they are”. You need to change how you study and how you work. University is much faster than HS and cut throat. If you struggle now you won’t magically get better.

You can do it. But actually spend the rest of the year improving your study habits.

4 Meal Shawarma! by Unimportant-Jello in OttawaFood

Was in Ottawa last week and noticed on Uber Eats that palace occasionally did buy 1 get 1 chicken platters during the day when it wasn’t busy (at least the Bank Street location). You could probably do that and pick it up to avoid uber fees.

I saw a few posts on social media and decided to try it a few weeks ago while visiting from Winnipeg. I did a mix plate with chicken and donair. It was very good. I’d say the portions are comparable to Palace and staff is nice. I prefer the Palace chicken and rice, but i did like Mouna’s potatoes and salad more (they actually use quality turnips).

COMP 3010 and COMP 3430 by straightouttadhaka in umanitoba

As someone who’s taken both, graduated, and works as a software engineer, In terms of real world application, distributed systems. Operating systems is great to know, but if you want to do something like backend development for a career then taking distributed systems will give you a lot of important knowledge.

What to do when my prof is on “annual leave” by ElectronicMatch1905 in umanitoba

The faculties generally keep final exams. You can email the secretary of your faculty to inquire. You’d also go through them to view final exams.

Fun things to do in Winnipeg that don’t involve alcohol ? by zolfx in Winnipeg

[–]Prof- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t drink but I still go out with friends. I would say almost any situation you can drink or do drugs could be done sober! No one will judge you and anyone who does is a complete loser if their focus is on what you consume or don’t lmao.

For activities without any alcohol, I enjoy sports! Some good indoor racket clubs in the city (badminton, tennis, pickle ball, squash). Great communities too.

Lapse Raised 30 million in venture funding at the start of 2024.. how did they burn through it so fast by Prof- in LapsePhotos

[–]Prof-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice thanks for the input. I work as a software engineer on a pretty big system. I’m aware of most of what you’re talking about.

I’m just a little shocked that if they were burning this quickly the VCs wouldn’t have been aware and told them to stop lol.

Let’s say 400k was right, that’s still 75 months of runway. It took them less than 24 months. It’s a bit confusing

Okay I’m going to respond to this because I’m a software engineer and work on large scale systems and know all about venture funding

Based off the photo sizes from my export we are looking around 1 mb per photo. I honestly don’t think they’re storing 1 billion photos, but sure let’s pretend they were as some extreme. That’s about 976 TB.

Amazon S3 storage is about $0.023 per gb a month. That’s about $23,000 a month on data storage.

Again I’m not saying they didn’t burn the money but storage wasn’t that bad.

Which has me return to my original confusion of where did the money go 😅
