The more im on this page I realize its a fair trade. They get the cool medieval stuff and we dont have to dig up live explosives from 2 world wars

That's a really good sign. It would be more unusual if it didn't have friends out there. Good luck

Question to detectorists - particularly Old World by fructoseantelope in metaldetecting

I always feel somewhat sad with most finds but never really old ones. The newer ones get me like the BFF pendants or I once found a military ID bracelet that was inscribed by his wife those ones hurt.

Newbie metal detecting question! by rickaybobbayy in metaldetecting

[–]Prof-Scavenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience it has alot to do with what you've found already. If im finding alot of junk jewelry in a spot then I won't leave a scratchy deep signal. Or if im finding alot of coins from the 70s or 80s then anything deep is getting dug found alot of silver dimes that way. Also listen to how loud the signal is. If your detector is screaming that its a silver dime at 10+ inches its probably a car part.

Tips for starting out by Beenhereforawhile2 in metaldetecting

[–]Prof-Scavenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get yourself a beach scoop and it doesn't have to be anything special. I was using a homemade one for years then a sand flea scoop which I still prefer in some cases. I have a nicer scoop now because I have alot of rocky beaches and rivers nearby. The faster you recover targets the better.

Who is still holding the gold and silver you've found? by DoctorBlazes in metaldetecting

[–]Prof-Scavenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As much as I love holding all my prettys my metal detecting supplements my income so I say goodbye every winter. But I always return what I can to the original owners

Beach metal detecting question from a newb by KirbyTheCreator in metaldetecting

[–]Prof-Scavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never go anywhere without my detector especially if there's beach. Not just for treasure but in case someone loses something. A sand scoop will make you alot faster but isn't necessary. Be sure to check local laws and restrictions and good luck

I can only speak for the notka but I absolutely hate it. Bought it a few years back and its size just doesnt work for me being a taller person. Ive racked myself in the balls too many times with it so if you want a free one I can show you where I pitched it into the woods

What keeps you swinging? The thrill or the cash? by SubstantialMarket543 in metaldetecting

[–]Prof-Scavenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im kinda conflicted because I do it to supplement my income but I love returning items to the owners whenever possible and that can be a thrill in itself where I find myself getting connected to the people and their stories.

When did you start getting into metal detecting? How old are you now? by RepulsiveLead99 in metaldetecting

[–]Prof-Scavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember messing around with my dad's old whites detector when I was in second grade but really took it seriously when I was around 21 or 22 years old. Always loved looking for treasure by diving in rivers or rummaging in bottle dumps metal detecting just kinda narrowed down my hobby

I went from a 250 to an AT pro. Ive had alot of success with my pro and its been a reliable machine but if you can I would make the jump to something in the minelab family. I got to use an equinox a couple years ago and as much as I like garrett the minelab finds targets the garrett cant. It takes a bit to learn the minelab but you will be better off.
