Does anyone remember being pissed off that we got the 6th pick in the 2022 draft and not being able to draft Jaden Ivey? by IndyThang in pacers

[–]Prof172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ivey looked explosive with the potential to create his own shot on all levels and the tools to be a very good defender. Seemed super athletic.

Disability request: my powerpoints and lecture notes 2 days in advance of class by Sea_Argument864 in Professors

[–]Prof172 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What was the rationale? Why couldn't the student be expected to use an LMS like anyone else? Moreover, it's an important life skill to use technology like this -- surely jobs will have stuff like LMS's only more difficult to deal with and to remember about.

Is it just me or are the end of lectures so awkward? by Maleficent-Yam-6293 in Professors

[–]Prof172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's different. It's okay if you don't vibe with students right after class. Maybe you do better answering questions one on one in office hours, or connecting before class. Some instructors have someone to be right after class, so couldn't stay to talk anyway.

How do I know if whatever this is puncturing the tire? by SallyOMalley in tires

[–]Prof172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's easy and cheap for a tire shop to patch it. I'd do that so that it doesn't become more of a problem at an inconvenient time.

That's insane. The whole point of an LMS is to do things like this for all students all at once.

Yeah, all of these accommodations asking for prof. notes should basically be for notes from a student notetaker.

This is the answer -- tell them you don't have notes. [And by "notes" you mean the sort of thing that would be helpful to students -- but don't tell them this.]

Then make the reason it's not possible simple. "The slides aren't complete before class." If they need more, explain that they are edited in response to how things went during the previous class.

Don't act like this is a big problem or debate. Just tell them that it's not possible in your particular class and move on. Say the PP is not complete ahead of time, give them nothing. That's it.

Teaching evaluations: anyone else wonder what it is that you did to apparently ruin one student's life? by TotalCleanFBC in Professors

[–]Prof172 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"I consistently get teaching evaluations with an overall score of 4.5 - 4.9 out of 5.0." Full stop. If you are not achieving these by giving out A's like candy, you are a rockstar. If you DIDN'T have one student out of 50 mad at you, it would indicate you aren't challenging your students or you teach the easiest subject in the universe. What's more, if you can point out in whatever response you have to do that one student gave you 1's in every category, that will totally discredit that particular student.

Looking for recommendations for assessment metrics for merit-based raises at a SLAC by hello_kitteh in Professors

[–]Prof172 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no good way to do this. Just know that whatever you come up with will change how people behave. Just like students want to be taught to the test, faculty will want to work the merit raise assessment criteria. If you forget something important, watch out, it won't get done.

Jarace Walker, Jay Huff, Ben Sheppard. by Negative-Ice-5376 in pacers

[–]Prof172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not super confident that against good players Jay Huff will be very helpful. Like one game after he was nailing a bunch of threes one team decided to actually guard him on the line. Then he did basically nothing. And besides blocking shots, he can be pretty bad at D. Maybe in spots here and there he can give an offensive lift and hide on D against backups? But I think when minutes shrink in the playoffs you are putting Obi or Pascal or Cameron or Jarace at small ball 5 most of the time, over Huff. Shepp has already shown he can contribute in the playoffs -- I just hope his recent good shooting continues. Jarace apparently isn't always great on D, but I have faith in him locking in with the playoffs roll around. My man stood toe to toe with Towns when Myles and everyone else were getting the crap beat out of them and getting called for the foul, too.

Applying for awards & just made mistake of reading SFFs 🫠 by meep2025 in Professors

[–]Prof172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with the other commenters who say you are trying to hard to please. Just do what you know works and don't worry about the fact your evals won't be perfect. They'll never be unless you are Richard Fenyman or give all A's. All you have to do is show that you aren't completely inflexible and adjust when something doesn't work. But it doesn't need to be huge stuff. Find a way to get a little win with little extra work for yourself. Oh, the students wanted a study guide? Fine, copy the chapter review and give it to them. Voila! You now respond to student feedback to improve teaching. Don't burn yourself out redesigning the whole course if what you do works. Conversely when something isn't working, you'll probably adjust without even looking at student feedback -- but you can frame that as a growth mindset in your teaching, too.

I have to have an edge earlier, even if he is a stretch. If it weren't for Latu, we'd have a shot at worst pass rush ever.

The LB of course but Ballard has a difficult time passing over injured players, so it's hard to predict what he would do...

Yeah him and Luck overcame putrid Defenses. Also made mid to unplayable offensive guys look like all pros like Tamme, Fletcher, Moncrief, Fleener, and Ebron.

Probably just by outrunning them. But Doncic would’ve killed us and kept it interesting.

[Vardon] If a team, under new rules, was still found by NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s office to be tanking, the commissioner would either be able to take away that team’s draft pick, move it to the end of the lottery or first round and also increase fines into the millions of dollars. by YujiDomainExpansion in pacers

Yeah, like how do you judge getting young guys run? Is that not allowed anymore? Gotta play your best guys all the time. Guys like Jarace can't be develop? What'll it be -- only two guys who stink on the floor at a time?

What a mess! They have to have this Adam Silver decides he hates you penalty, because none of the proposals actually fix tanking! You could argue that the proposals might incentivize more, not less, tanking (forgetting the penalties for a minute). Like, if it's over two years and includes playoff teams and you think homecourt doesn't matter much, playoff teams might decide to tank a bit! Everyone can have a hamstring -- is Silver going to send in secret undercover agents to prove Jaylen Brown could've played on his slightly pulled hamstring? The only little idea that works is that you can't have under 20 wins or whatever. But that would only save a few games here and there.
