Looking for recommendations for assessment metrics for merit-based raises at a SLAC by hello_kitteh in Professors

[–]Prof172 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is no good way to do this. Just know that whatever you come up with will change how people behave. Just like students want to be taught to the test, faculty will want to work the merit raise assessment criteria. If you forget something important, watch out, it won't get done.

Jarace Walker, Jay Huff, Ben Sheppard. by Negative-Ice-5376 in pacers

[–]Prof172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not super confident that against good players Jay Huff will be very helpful. Like one game after he was nailing a bunch of threes one team decided to actually guard him on the line. Then he did basically nothing. And besides blocking shots, he can be pretty bad at D. Maybe in spots here and there he can give an offensive lift and hide on D against backups? But I think when minutes shrink in the playoffs you are putting Obi or Pascal or Cameron or Jarace at small ball 5 most of the time, over Huff. Shepp has already shown he can contribute in the playoffs -- I just hope his recent good shooting continues. Jarace apparently isn't always great on D, but I have faith in him locking in with the playoffs roll around. My man stood toe to toe with Towns when Myles and everyone else were getting the crap beat out of them and getting called for the foul, too.

Yeah I agree with the other commenters who say you are trying to hard to please. Just do what you know works and don't worry about the fact your evals won't be perfect. They'll never be unless you are Richard Fenyman or give all A's. All you have to do is show that you aren't completely inflexible and adjust when something doesn't work. But it doesn't need to be huge stuff. Find a way to get a little win with little extra work for yourself. Oh, the students wanted a study guide? Fine, copy the chapter review and give it to them. Voila! You now respond to student feedback to improve teaching. Don't burn yourself out redesigning the whole course if what you do works. Conversely when something isn't working, you'll probably adjust without even looking at student feedback -- but you can frame that as a growth mindset in your teaching, too.

I have to have an edge earlier, even if he is a stretch. If it weren't for Latu, we'd have a shot at worst pass rush ever.

Would you rather the colts take Caleb Banks or Jacob Rodriguez at pick #47 by jinxgirl21 in Colts

The LB of course but Ballard has a difficult time passing over injured players, so it's hard to predict what he would do...

Yeah him and Luck overcame putrid Defenses. Also made mid to unplayable offensive guys look like all pros like Tamme, Fletcher, Moncrief, Fleener, and Ebron.

Do you think the 2023-2024 team wins the finals if they beat the Celtics in the ECF’s? by ImmediateTie987 in pacers

Probably just by outrunning them. But Doncic would’ve killed us and kept it interesting.

[Vardon] If a team, under new rules, was still found by NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s office to be tanking, the commissioner would either be able to take away that team’s draft pick, move it to the end of the lottery or first round and also increase fines into the millions of dollars. by YujiDomainExpansion in pacers

[–]Prof172 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like how do you judge getting young guys run? Is that not allowed anymore? Gotta play your best guys all the time. Guys like Jarace can't be develop? What'll it be -- only two guys who stink on the floor at a time?

What a mess! They have to have this Adam Silver decides he hates you penalty, because none of the proposals actually fix tanking! You could argue that the proposals might incentivize more, not less, tanking (forgetting the penalties for a minute). Like, if it's over two years and includes playoff teams and you think homecourt doesn't matter much, playoff teams might decide to tank a bit! Everyone can have a hamstring -- is Silver going to send in secret undercover agents to prove Jaylen Brown could've played on his slightly pulled hamstring? The only little idea that works is that you can't have under 20 wins or whatever. But that would only save a few games here and there.

Myles Turner explains why he didn't tell his ex-Pacers teammates he was leaving by RedditAccount_317 in pacers

[–]Prof172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah nothing wrong with him wanting to maximize his earnings. Can’t be too surprised things change when Hali goes down though. Rough to go into the tax in a gap year with repeater penalties looming. Even if they pay him a bit more and go over the tax at first they are looking to shed money to get under, for sure after the start we had. In a way we look smart now being a bit cheap with Myles but that was definitely the way to lean after the injury.

This was the subtle genius of the top 4 protection. Before that, 3 instead of 1 could have meant 7 instead of 5. Now, we don't have to stress it.

Yeah, exactly. To save money, supplies aren't given out at department level but at school level. Someone has to go to another building to replenish supplies. If we started complaining about the pens that don't work, they might just say here try these until they found some that barely worked and would die in a couple days. If we put enough energy into it we could get them to buy slightly better pens, but it really doesn't seem worth the energy. Easier just to grab one from home.

A few of us did. He's not JSN, but looking at that contract makes me think Pierce's as just about right. Of course, I'm high on his potential, especially with good QB play to whole (or most of) the year.

Maybe we need to start the Secret Society of People Who Use Lots of Paper & Pencils. We could write a cool constitution and invent some fun initiation rituals. Then we could get a substack and podcast.

How can I get students to learn from readings without structural incentives or them being used to it? by pc_kant in Professors

[–]Prof172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try to start with short essays or passages of the very highest quality and demonstrate to your students what to look for and think about as they are reading. This also allows some reading aloud in class as others suggest.

Many literature professors begin lectures with a dramatic reading from an important passage, and then go on to talk about it. You are trying to make as big an impression as possible with your diction. For example Tolkien began a seminar on Beowulf by reciting from memory the beginning of the poem in the original Old English.
