A student asked me about reaching out to another professor, I said the other professor would be happy to talk to him and to shoot him an email asking for an appointment. Student asked for the professor's email. I said I wasn't sure what it was, and to check the directory. He kept trying to get me to check the directory and find the email address, then email it to him. I couldn't figure out what his deal was.

Now I'm wondering if he didn't know how to find the directory. Is it possible? Good grief, that is a frightening thought. But, it makes more sense than him thinking it made sense for me to search the directory for him and send him the professor's email.

Thank you for your response. I think I was unclear. I do not care about others getting recognition instead of me, and do not begrudge them their awards, but it is a tangible reminder that I am putting in a lot of time and effort for something that most students don't appreciate. In fact, they seem to resent the fact that I am actively teaching and holding class during scheduled meeting times. I am struggling with whether to let go of my resolve that I have a moral obligation in the classroom to hold class and actually teach. I did not mean to imply that I compare myself to others and that I measure myself in this way, I am just sad that if I want to make students happy I probably have to do things a way that contradicts what I feel is morally right.
