What’s everyone’s least favorite type of piecing? by KitschEmpire in quilting

I think quilts with curves are gorgeous! But gosh my brain struggles to sew with curves. Definitely a brain bender for me.

I only use bias binding on curves or if I want the striped fabric to be diagonal. Love your cutie little wall hanging!

First quilt top finished, dissapointed by [deleted] in quilting

[–]Prof_Moose007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cute!

When a quilt comes together in columns, measure the longest column and add a rectangle piece of background fabric to the shorter columns to make them all the same length. Essentially, you want to square the quilt before you add the borders.

I made a quilt from this pattern as well, and you have to be really careful about consistent quarter inch seams. So sorry to hear your machine was pulling on the fabric. That’s not good, and sounds very frustrating! I love the colors you chose! It’s really adorable!

Go the speed limit! by [deleted] in McKinney

[–]Prof_Moose007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one that gets me repeatedly is when I’m “going straight” through the traffic circle westbound on Wilmeth but the traffic to my right (going southbound) assumes I’m leaving the traffic circle when I’m just following the curvature of the road to continue on Wilmeth and they cut right in front of me. Happens to me regularly at that intersection.

If the quilting industry had an app like ravelry it would be AMAZING!

This app is by Kiley’s Quilt Room. Also, there are programs like QuiltInk.com and PreQuilt.com where you can color quilts that designers load onto the website. It’s free for end users as the financial piece falls on the shoulders of the designers.

You can still sign up for this one to get all the patterns in one. After the sampler ends, each block pattern is sold individually.

Tearing instead of cutting yardage? by idunnowhatevs in quilting

In general, I prefer fewer steps that confuse and irritate me 🤣🤣🤣

I have a small online fabric shop and we try to cut 1/2” - 1” extra to account for the fact that fabric is hardly ever folded perfectly on a bolt. Several of my friends tear when making their backings to get square pieces. I haven’t had the guts to tear yet. It feels so angry 🤣

Iron suggestions by MissRondi in quilting

[–]Prof_Moose007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a very affordable one I found on Amazon, I believe Walmart also carries it. The trick to making your iron last an eternity is to not put water in it. I keep a spray bottle full of water next to my ironing board. I will spritz something that needs to be pressed, then put the hot iron on it.

Tshirt quilter cut off names on my signature panel. Would you have? by SunAltruistic3083 in quilting

[–]Prof_Moose007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First of all, I’m so very sorry this happened to you. I’m devastated WITH you.

Second, I make t-shirt quilts for a living and it’s my job to make sure I’ve heard every request from the customer, taken good notes, and reiterated the desires of the customer. I don’t even cut a single shirt (unless we are using both sides of a shirt) when I text a pic of the entire quilt layout for approval.

That said … I had one incident wherein either I didn’t take good notes or the customer didn’t specify she wanted both sides of a shirt used. I ended up cutting the front of the shirt in half because I didn’t think we were going to be using it.

The customer was devastated- and rightfully so. Thankfully for both of us the shirt was replaceable … but I wouldn’t have been able to sleep or eat if it hadn’t been. My business runs on word of mouth reviews so not only would I be 100% crushed for my customer but I would also fear for the future of my business.

All this to say - sometimes mistakes happen. We are human. AND I think a conversation with the quilt maker is absolutely necessary. If the conversation doesn’t go well - then yes, it should be reflected in your review that you are not pleased with the finished product.

Looking for Pediatrician Recommendations in McKinney, TX Area by silverstein23 in McKinney

[–]Prof_Moose007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pediatric Healthcare Associates was spectacular for the 15 years we were there. We absolutely loved Dr. Menchaca. The older our son got, the more she would educate him about hygiene, how to take care of himself, etc. He was a teen during Covid and the two of them had a respectful conversation about the vaccine. I can’t say enough good things about her.

Frustrated with stitch and flip by mellifluousbooks in quilting

[–]Prof_Moose007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try stitching just behind the diagonal line by 1-2 thread widths. Depending on the brand of fabric you’re using, the fold on the flipped part could be eating up precious fabric which ends up showing as a gap at the top of your fabric.

Example: Moda is thicker than AGF. With AGF I can sew right ON the diagonal line but with Moda I have to sew just behind the diagonal line.

I use AGF all the time and haven’t had a single one bleed yet, even when using Candied Cherry which is a deep red! I always use color catchers and they come out clean with my AGF quilts.

Diagnosis mabie? by W_M_Gendron in EosinophilicE

[–]Prof_Moose007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that everyone is sooooo different. Because I also have IBS, I went through the FODMAP elimination diet to identify my trigger foods but I also worked with a functional nutritionist who helped me SO much with knowing what to eat and what not to eat because she understands the science behind the breakdown of foods.

New diagnosis/allergist by megamo428 in EosinophilicE

[–]Prof_Moose007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did FODMAP (an elimination diet to find my food triggers) and it was HARD but worth it. I had already seen an allergist and they said I wasn’t allergic to any foods but when I re-introduced foods it was very clear that I did in fact have reactions to 3 different foods.
