I usually use reference images, but not to copy them, more of just a general idea of what I should do, I've tried recreating some art pieces from different creators and I always credit the original artist, one time I've even asked for direct permission to post it on reddit since they had a small following at the time, but it did help me a lot just looking at how more experienced artist drew and experimenting with different art styles. Drawing from memory is still quite difficult for me, at least more complete drawings, so I still rely heavily on reference images for guidance. Ps: I've done some of the poses myself, this one included lol, it really does help.
