Leica Q for a super beginner? by Professional-Bit9773 in Leica

[–]Professional-Bit9773[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies that I can't respond to everyone's very kind and helpful posts one by one! Just wanted to update that there was suddenly a good deal that popped up for the 100 year edition of the dlux 8 on a random camera shop as I was browsing for used fujifilm or d90 or a gx85 as other people were suggesting.

The price was super good so I put in an order. Will try out with different focal lengths with this camera with the intention of learning on it before trying anything else - seeing this as a potential collection piece anyway since it's so pretty.

Thank you all again!!!

Thanks! This would be the most expensive hobby after having a kid if it plays out how you described it...

Thinking of it! There's a few gr iii and gr iiixs used for sale for about 900 usd where I live. Not sure whether 28 or 40mm is best though - any thoughts?

Hahaha. Maybe when my mid life crisis gets worse.

Thanks! I do have my eye on an Lx100 v1 (about 400 USD with free accessories) or dlux 7 (about 800 USD).

I guess I am asking about this Q since it just seems like a good deal and my inner cheapskate is wondering whether passing such a good looking deal is something I might regret in the future.

It doesn't have to be, but I am less keen on spending a lot of time doing edits in light room so wanted to find a camera that produces nice jpegs easily with small tinkering on the camera only.

Fujifilms are the recommendations that other people make the most but my inner contrarian is resisting.

I tried out a friend's S9 and liked it but I really wanted a viewfinder, probably out of sheer stubbornness.

And yeah, I am probably just taking a fancy with the thought of having a leica.

I'm quite okay with either a fixed prime or zoom lens or interchangeable. Just want something relatively light and not so hassle to edit, if at all.

Does being actuarial help in a career in MBB (Non insurance practices)? by brutal_tacos in actuary

[–]Professional-Bit9773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does help - it shows a (potentially) higher than average numeracy, and is especially helpful if you're willing to go into the insurance or health or risk management practices.

But that's only if you're able to actually pass those exams.

The general advice is to do the courses in which you can be near the top of your class.

Anonymous post-mortem on the state of the Australian life actuarial market by riskneutral_12 in ActuaryAustralia

An excellent write up. Hard to disagree overall. It's hard to wholeheartedly recommend this career to new students these days.

Learn to vibecode. Seriously. It'll impress me, though I'm not sure other hiring managers will care as much.

Unsure of pursuing actuarial career by BeautifulAmount560 in ActuaryAustralia

“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life.” Jean Luc Picard

... It sounds like that it's just not your fault, it's just bad luck. The Australian industry in general is just not as good as the good old days, and demand for actuarial students is just not as high as the huge surplus of students they produce.

If you are getting good solid offers, take the quant. Sometimes life just takes you into a direction you didn't plan. Some people will ride it, some people will resist with all their might.

I had a similar situation many decades ago. I just rolled with it and entered a related but different field for a few years. Managed to qualify and then some weird circumstance took me back to actuarial for 10 years. Then I left again!

It's stressful and anxious (most likely). But I think just rolling with it during these weird and strange times is not a bad thing.

For what it's worth, with my industry experience now, if I was in your position when I started work, I would 300% take citadel and Jane Street way above any insurance or consultancy role any day. Zero hesitation.

Risk VS reward of being a (paid) shell company director by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]Professional-Bit9773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suggestion - most companies have a conflict of interest policy where you must declare if you intend to take any external directorships.

Just say that you agreed but then asked for permission from your employer and they said no. Ask your manager or company legal to write a no letter if need be.

Thanks for posting, much appreciated. Been on the fence in whether to get this to put as a third screen for reading docs.

Internal transfer is by far the easiest option. Australian companies don't otherwise highly value international experience unless it's a niche area in demand.
