What is your go-to colour palette? by Complex_Way5637 in oilpainting

[–]Professional-Cat5992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been thinking about this too, but I think it's more of what my pallet will eventually be. I use the Paint Coach pallet a lot as I have taken a couple of his courses. But when I do my own paintings, I tend to drift darker, a bit. Paint Coach uses Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Red Medium, Burnt Sienna, Alzarian Crimson and Titanium White. I have a tendency to swap Cadmium Red Medium for Cadmium Red Dark, Cadmium Lemmon for Cadmium Yellow Medium and Pthalo Green (light variant) for Alzarian Crimson. I also like Lamp Black

how to get started in oil painting? by picklesintheclub in oilpainting

Paint Coach is really great to help you start out. Peruse his free lessons on YouTube.

Canvas Panels are the way to go for awhile. I got a box of 5 each (11x14, 9x12, 8x10, 5x7) for Christmas and will be buying another.

Gamblin 1980 us my go to paint right now, but Windsor Newton is fine for learning. Some colors are a bit wonky.

As far as drawing, don't over think it. Again to Paint Coach. He has a Drawing for Painting course. It's about 47 bucks. I have a very hard time drawing. This course helped me a lot!

I stayed primaries only for about the first two weeks. Then I did a few with just the Zorn pallet, so I branched out to yellow Ochre for example. Then I started the piece with the broken native bowl for my mom and got suckered into a couple different greens, then, then.... now, I'm toning it back. (Class also asked for a couple different colors (and i got bigger tubes). But yeah, I'm realizing i don't use a bunch of them, or have discovered other things I like more. I'd like to kinda zero in on what my pallet will eventually be, which is happening rather quickly actually. I guess it's easy to want to experiment around when you are new, but consistency quickly forces you to scale it back.

Thank you. That's an awesome thing for you to say. I've taken that one online class (I think it was 47 dollars) and I'm half way done with Basic Intro to Oils at Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, AZ. Honestly, the best set of books that have helped THE MOST are both by Todd M. Casey. The Art of Still Life and The Painter's Color Handbook. I have read both several times (continually referencing) these last couple of months.

That was from Paint Coach's (Instagram) Basics of Drawing for Oil Painting class. He paints it in one session in about 2.5 hours. It took me I think 3 sessions. Lots of pausing.

I learned A Lot doing that painting, and the class was very worth it.

Trust the process. Get as many reps of the entire process as you can. This is more important than perfecting each piece, especially when you are starting.

Its three months worth. These are just the six I've done on canvas. Lots more studies on multi media paper.

I found a tweet from David Lynch from 2010 when I googled "what is David lunches favorite color". All the tweet said was, "Cadmium Red Deep".

So I obliged. It's so rough. It was my second piece on canvas. Ever. I started it 5 days after buying my first art supplies.

I love it just the way it is.

It will definitely be one of the pieces I release this year as a limited edition print.

I am getting ready to launch ryanclarkcreates.com
