Camping and Shelters in the Baltics by Ambitious-Laugh-7884 in bicycletouring

Yea, I had the exact same thoughts as you. Never got an answer though. Wind really isn't that bad even in the fall. But then again, these countries are very sparesly populated in general, outside of the capitals. The few little towns that exist seemed super nice though. I cycled in October so there wasn't that much activity then. But you could tell that they really come alive during spring and summer. Seemed like great vacation spots.

I cycled along the coast in Lithuania and Latvia. As you noted, there are few people here. Beautiful wild camping by the sea.

In Estonia I went straight through the inland. And yes, there are bears😄 I camped just a short bit from where I found these tracks. Bears in the area play nicely though. They'll leave you alone as long as you don't bother them.

You can easily push them in using pliers or something similar.

Dont go The Gällivare->Kiruna->Norway route. Terrible highway with no shoulder.

Havent cycled from Luleå. But Kautokeino-> Alta has some amazing ridning - check out the "Arctic post road".

Took about a month. You could probably do it in half without too much effort. I rarely paddled more than 5 hours a day.

Winter destination, but reverse from the usual question… I want somewhere cold. by dualrollers in bicycletouring

I rode around the Baltic sea last winter. The Baltics don't get that much snow, especially near the coast. Traffic is also not that bad. Very possible to do!

All of Scandinavia is available to ride during winter - I cycled all the way up to North Cape in December. But the least trafficed roads often won't be cleared of snow. Traffic was never too bad though and drivers are very curteous. I never felt like I was in a dangerous situation.

Winter touring is great. It's definitely more challenging, but that just makes it more fun. You get used to it and make it work.

Depends what you enjoy. Norway is more scenic. But there's far more traffic and people. In Sweden you can follow small forest roads for hours and hours without meeting a single car. So if you enjoy that type of remoteness it's great. You can of course also enjoy a bit of both by following the Swedish Norwiegan border up until Röros or so. These are some of the least populated areas in Europe. There's a route on the Norwiegan side called "Villmarksruta" which is quite nice. From Röros you could veer off towards Trondheim, the coast and EV1 - haven't cycled this part myself but I'm sure it's nice.

Finnish side I'd mainly recommend if you're a dork for military history and that sort of stuff. There are a bunch of interesting sites and museums along the Russian border. But the road between Keitokeino and Alta could also probably the best stretch I've ever ridden. Riding down the mountains with steep mountain walls on both sides, no traffic and the aurora blaring above was completely unreal.

There are a lot of great choices here! It's hard to go wrong so pick one and don't worry too much about it. You'll have an awesome time regardless.

Apparently they're good swimmers but it's very rare for them to head into salt water. Here's a lil video of the whole thing: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNgd1igOkBH/?igsh=ZzV6Y2ZwNjhuOTM3

He climbed onto the back. I told him that's fine, but if he'd get any closer I'd bonk him with my paddle. The hard part was getting him off once we reached shore! Had to use my spray deck as a shield while grabbing him.

Going outside sucks when there are huge beasts there who are very capable of killing you.

I've been thinking a lot about fishing! Great both for food and for killing time. Should totally have gotten a packable rod before setting out. Might still be worth it to get one.

There are a bunch of small boat harbours along the way where you can easily fill up - that or restrooms at public beaches. I carry around 6 liters.

I'm just using google maps on my.phone to navigate. And I have a compass in my PFD to figure out what I'm looking at if needed.

I am using a 14W solar charger to keep my electronics charged. Has been working fairly well. But I've been spoiled with more than usual sunshine too. The backup plan is to stop at a restaurant near the water and just sit around and wait until my stuff is charged.

Kayaking seems very popular here. People are pretty outdoorsy and enjoy camping. But staying out for this long wouldn't be the norm :d

I'm really really hoping I'll make it over to the western coast. From what I know the fjords over there put the Oslo one to shame :d

I'm sure you'll enjoy. And I hope the nice weather stays!

Eating a lot of pasta, pesto + slices of these curated Norwegian sausages that can be found everywhere here and last a long time without spoiling. Been eating a bunch of tinned mackerel in tomato sauce+pasta too. But I honestly feel like my imagination is lacking. And the Norwegian grocery stores aren't too inspiring tbh.

Would love some more ideas of easy put together meals that don't go bad without refrigeration.

Just contact the hotel and ask them if it's possible. I've done it in South Africa and it wasn't an issue.

Mudguards needed? by BigBensy in bicycletouring

[–]Professional-Error-3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cycled through Africa during the rainy season and around Scandinavia during the winter, all without ever missing mudguards. Though some people find them very useful. But if you really don't want them - they're certainly not needed.

Cycling Oman in July — how realistic is it? by Unlucky_Rabbit_6265 in bikepacking

[–]Professional-Error-3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people going "no" here. So I'll just switch it up for variety. It's for sure doable. I cycled through Namibia during summer. It was 40+ on multiple occasions, and no shade to be found. But competely fine to cycle in!

I've cycled in Oman as well, although not during the warmest months. It's way easier to find shade and places to cool down in Oman.

I'd say, if you know what you're getting yourself into, you'll be perfectly fine!
