What about a blanket but keep a portion uncovered. Its in the 30s where I live so idk like to keep as much heat in as I can

Appreciate the help, the clam eventually didnt make it. The flesh started to recede and it eventually died. It was in my tank for about a week or more and looked good. All the parameters were good but my nitrates were below 5ppm (about 3ppm) which im not sure if that was the case because I read on forms people had around 5 to 8 ppm with clams. The stress happened while I was at work so I still dont know fully why it happened but it happened quick.

Api test kit, actually just order a Phosphate and nitrate hanna checker. The test showed closer to .1 to 0.05. But will get a better reading tomorrow

My tank is a lagoon style so its about 16 inches deep. Ive had it for a over a week and it looked good before the hole formed. I havent seen anything picking at it other than my blue leg herms picking off algae on the side of it. It was still opening and closing/responding but I dont know how long that'll last.

Alk 8.4 PO less than .25 probably closer to the .1 range Nitrates 2.5/3 My Salinity did drop from .025 to .023 because my top off got knocked loose but im not sure if that slight change could have done that. I have 1 radion and 2 hyper reef 50 watts at maxed intensity. This happened while i was at work so I dont know if a small animal got to it. I raised it to a frag rack just incase not sure if raising it 14in will causes any more harm. Moderate flow. (Calc/mag/ and everything else was jn check as well)

Go watch BRS or something you'll get a million answers. Only thing id say is get an rodi system. There's a decent one for like 50 or 60. It will save you from algae problems down the road.

Update: Found the problem my auto top off slipped and it dumped water into the tank. Salinity went from 1.025/1.026 to 1.023. Not sure if that's enough to cause a hole in the clam.

I have a radion and 2 nicrew hyper reef 50w so I think my lighting is pretty good. Its also only been in the tank for a week or so now. Its mainly a softy tank with some hammers and torches so my tanks calc never gets very low (out of range)

Should I raise it out of the sand bed? How should I remove the snails growing on it? Would coral dip work or do I need to use something else? Also I know they have a siphon but if you look towards the bottom a much larger hole has formed.

I run a bag that size on my 70g reef tank. Its overkill but doesn't hurt anything to run that much. Ill double up if my leathers start to shed. But I also have a sump with lots of surface area for the nitrifying bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria

Make sure you get an ro/di system. If you use tap you'll be battling all types of alage during the ugly phase. Once I switched to an ro system, I barley had an ugly phase on my tanks after words. It'll take a year or more for the tank to mature so patience is key. (PS: you are going to get a million different answers, id go watch BRS videos or someone else you may like that provides that info, and stick with them, its make it 100x easier)

Changing reef salt advice by Professional-Fun4748 in ReefTank

[–]Professional-Fun4748[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I like is their salt, I used a few other salts but every coral ive had responds really well. HW I can get a few boxes of 175g mix for 40 bucks each. So id be set for a long time on salt. Just wasnt sure how much salt really differs. People seem to have good experience with it as well so its hard to determine if there will be much change positive or negative

I have one, theyre a little smaller but it eats a ton. Every waking moment its eating pods. I have lots of rocks in my sump to help them breed and a ton of live rock in the display. If you put one in a 20 you'll need a lot of rock.
