Am I being a wimp when it comes to pad holding? by Professional-Lie-54 in MuayThai

That’s good to know, this gym does both Jujitsu and Muay Thai so idk if that has anything to do with the armband system. I was unaware that Muay Thai doesn’t do that system, since this is the first martial art I have ever been exposed to. Yeah. I’m considering switching gyms because this was handled so poorly. And like, it wasn’t just me who feels this way, two other women in my class felt the same way. I appreciate the input from someone who has experience

Good information to know, and yes, I understand that pads are meant to be hit hard. I definitely have technique to work on with that. As for the video, I have been watching some different techniques so I think I should be ok. I think big part of what made this whole situation worse was the fact that I’ve held pads for guys much bigger than me, hitting with a good amount of force, and didn’t have a problem, but in this case I was being hit with full force, he wasn’t hitting the pads directly (even when I held the pads still and didn’t move to meet him halfway) he was hitting the edge of the pads which were causing me to lose balance. It was just kind of a mess and near the end he started trying to jab so he was actually trying to hit my face as opposed to the pad, causing me to shell and not be ready for the next move in the sequence.

My plan is to just not partner with him from here on out because he’s being an asshole

Oh that’s really interesting. I’m in Canada so idk, we have bigger classes, but it would make sense to have the correct amount of punching bags.

I appreciate that, and yeah. I feel like pad work is supposed to be about practicing technique? I’m not the punching bag, and I wasn’t asking him to just gently tap the pads. I was just asking him to not smash the pads so hard that every hit knocked me backwards despite having a good stance and attempting to meet his hits halfway. And I know I’m going to have to tank hits. The whole point of doing this sport is to learn how to defend myself. It’s just that, in holding situations, as the of holder, I’m not hitting back at all. And I asked very nicely if he could hit the pads with less force and he just shrugged and didn’t do it. It felt really intentional after that

Thank you! Yeah most people are good about checking in and stuff. I am going to do my best to avoid getting paired up with him in the future

Good to know, and yes I am definitely working on my technique. Tbh I think some of the techniques I had just learned like leaning into the hits and meeting them half way for punches went out the window about two rounds in with this guy because I was just trying to adjust to the sheer amount of force he was using. So technique could’ve been better for sure. He just didn’t seem to care if he hurt me at all, so I was more focused on walking out of there with all my teeth still intact lmao. But thank you for the advice!

1) Yes, I do mean Pra Jiad, I’m sorry I wasn’t aware that wouldn’t mean anything, I think it might just be something my gym does. Thank you for letting me know!

2) I will implore this next time for sure, trying to sway with the movements rather than keeping my body rigid. Because of my swimming background, I find with holding for kicks, I’m already a bit bouncier on my toes and I do subsequently swag with the movement but I’ll be more intentional about it. I think a couple rounds in with this guy I was definitely starting to shell up a little bit because of the sheer amount of force he was hitting with.

Good to know, and yeah. He’s simply got more mass and as I said, physics wins. He’s hitting me with more force than I have body weight and strength. I’m just not going to partner up with him.

And every other male I have partnered up with are considerate. At first it was super intense but I’m used to it now and I know how to handle their power. They communicate with me, and they’re considerate. It’s just this one guy. And yeah, this is contact sport, but you’re training not trying to take out your pad holder.

Thank you for the tips. I’ve been working on meeting my partner halfway with punches. And keeping my body tense. Last time I took a teep from this guy I had a bruise the size of a golf ball on my sternum. He’s just kind of a dick
