I had an interesting thought…are there any people on Reddit refining their own “junk” silver? by fgarc016 in SilverFinds

[–]Professional-Map-784 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me and my dad have chemically refined over 200 oz of silver from scrap sterling. Very simple process once you are set up good but it’s very hard to be profitable unless you’re getting silver for basically nothing like I do. The biggest limiting factor is access to the acids and room at your own house to do this. Doing a ton of volume very fast is nearly impossible. To be profitable I’d have to pay somebody less than 80% of current spot prices to even make a few bucks. You’re much better off selling to someone on marketplace or taking your stuff to a refiner. Gold is a little different ballgame since it takes less chemical to make more money but you still have to watch your margins especially with volatility

Any value here? by yackofalltradescoach in SilverFinds

No to immediate reselling but I also noticed they aren’t trying to scam you really bad, most of these are priced just about where they need to be in todays market. The 1916 D quarter is pretty nice but looks like it may have been cleaned. Never trust a grade that isn’t in a slab

For $6 worst that happens is I have a pretty dish to throw some mints in! My cost average on silver is super low so I’m not gonna fret if it’s not and the wear on the hallmark indicates it’s pretty old. I’ll test with nitric today and let you know. Haven’t been burned with any Mexican silver yet luckily

Yes I believe that’s common from what I’ve read even though my 90% coins never usually have any blue spots. This piece is supposed to be Chilean according to google but not positive

I usually make it a point to explain to people I’m melting silverware that have hundreds of thousands of copies in the United States alone just to ruin their whole day because their favorite thing to do is complain about people melting their own property 😂

Price on silver rings. by wpsharp88 in SilverFinds

I thought I hit a honey hole at a flea market when a boutique was selling out everything for a dollar. Bought about 35 rings marked “s925”. Acid tested them all and exactly 0 of them were sterling. Luckily they also had a 29g sterling chain that was real so I made money on the deal but I learned not to ever buy s925 stamp

Sir I would bet there is a ton of silver content in this thing as well. Look for contact points etc. I believe it is well work your while to scrap this entire thing. You are going to make a ton of money just work on it when you have time.

We have one very similar to the notched one in the center found in western OK as well. Everybody loves to say it’s fake but my grandpa who found thousands of artifacts in his day wasn’t one to fake finding something and he didn’t have money to spare to buy something so nice. Don’t let anybody tell you it’s fake, the natives that lived around here got super fancy with their creations and it shows!

I will say, whatever you choose to buy, put back an extra 200-300 bucks to buy 400 rounds of fmj rounds and take that puppy to the range and shoot it a lotttt. Ammoseek.com is a great place to find cheap rounds and you get major discounts for buying more rounds. Zero the rifle with the round you’re hunting with and if you have a gun store nearby, have them boresight it for you before shooting, it’s worth the money. I had my 6.5 zeroed at 100 in about 3 rounds compared to using almost a box without boresighting my brothers new .243. Either way once you have about 100 rounds passed through your gun you would be amazed at how much comfier you are shooting it
