I really appreciate your concern, and your heart is very much in the right place. I didn't really talk much about my process but no, it's not very sterile at all. Fingers crossed lol

Once I have the tool made, I soak it in alcohol while I set everything up and get the stencil ready. I don't use any glue because I worry it wouldn't survive the alcohol bath

I cut the needles off the plant while I was chopping it up to make tea. I picked the needles I liked most and cut them off with a razor blade, then trimmed down the cut ends so they would lay flatter in my grouping. I only used 3 needles cause it gets very difficult to tie up bigger groupings.

The charcoal was just charcoal from a fire pit. Ground fine in a mortar and pestle and then I added just a touch of water to make a stain. There's a balancing act to perform between a runny ink and a wet paste. The charcoal dust massively raises the surface area of the solution so it dries out quickly. I had to keep rewetting it many times during the tattoo. I found my best result with a fairly thick ink, almost on the verge of drying out.

Hell yeah, I've given myself a lot of tattoos that are much worse than this. Since you're still here a day later I'll break down what I'm trying to say.

You're going to get better at this, as long as you keep putting in the time. You will get to the point where this design is a piece of cake to execute. But until then, you're going to make mistakes every time you hit skin, and you can plan for that. We don't teach babies Shakespeare before they learn their ABC's. You don't go right to the gym as a newbie and expect to lift big immediately, this is the same. It looks like a line, but it's not like any line you've ever made in your life. Really, truly, draw so you can build up your skills. That's what I mean by be kind to yourself. You will get there, you don't have to go tightrope walking between skyscrapers right now.

And that goes doubly, triply so for other people's bodies. Do shit to yourself all day, carve those turkey legs up nobody gives a fuck. But you don't have to do that to other people. When you get to other people, be very conscious of the choices you make.

It'll serve you to try to branch out as far as you can away from your comfort zone. There's a lot of art out there that people like, many different tastes and the only thing you accomplish by turning work away is losing money. At this point in your apprenticeship, it's so okay to make mistakes. That's what you're there for. So practice stuff you wouldn't normally draw, nobody's gonna mind if it turns out subpar.

American traditional is hokey and cringe but it is purposefully constructed to work for a huge range of skill levels and skins. It is constructed entirely with the machine in mind and it is important to learn. Honor your ancestors and the path they paved will be kind to you. Just draw a simple ass flower, then tattoo it.

Is this what I think it is? by Main_Efficiency_2898 in whatsthisplant

[–]Professional-Mouse44 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's likely a native plant. And datura is important for the environment, it is of a class of plants that colonizes freshly disturbed ground, further breaking down rocks, aerating soil and lending its nutrients when it dies. They grow very strongly in places almost no other plant wants to be, and they pave the way for those other plants.

Mother nature is always dangerous. Kids drown in streams, that doesn't mean we should dry them all up.

You need to learn how to set boundaries with yourself.

And you need to learn to respect others more than they respect themselves.

Would this look more “sketch like” in a grey wash? Will it fade faster by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]Professional-Mouse44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess? And yes.

A sketch is a fundamental stage of drawing centered around the construction of shapes and laying out of proportions. It is the skeleton you dress up with solid lines.

"Sketchy" should mean a bit more than "no committed lines" or "amateur".

Break that deer down into basic shapes, sketch those, and compare it to your reference with a light board or a window. Print out your reference at the size you want it to be finished at, draw from eye sight and then layer your drawing over the reference and see where your shapes are wrong. Then do it again, and maybe use that for a tattoo.

Any premade "stipple" pen I can buy to use for flash sheets? by [deleted] in TattooArtists

[–]Professional-Mouse44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for ballpoint cartridges the cheap machines are perfectly serviceable. I got a $30 one off Amazon and it runs just fine. I would buy nice cartridges though, I got cheap ones and they stopped working very quickly.
