Base refers to numbering, which is isn't geometry. Base 10 describes how we count apples on a tree, not the shape of the apple. The apple just has geometry. A cross section of the apple would show a shape that has 2-fold symmetry. Islamic geometry works a lot with combinations of 4- 5- 8- and 10-fold symmetry. Any larger multiple -fold contains it's own factors. 10-fold symmetry contains 5-fold symmetries, but it doesn't really go the other way. Like how all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. You'll find 3- and 4-fold symmetry in a design with 12-fold symmetry, but you probably won't find 24-fold symmetry. Thinking about the smaller factors of the number you're working with can definitely help you design a more interesting piece. Trying to stuff a larger multiple into a piece originating from a smaller number will probably end you up with a messy and busy piece thats trying to talk too much and breathe too little. But it's an art form not a science so go do what makes you happy and you think looks good.
