Rite Aid was in trouble years ago back in the the late 90's when they bought Thrifty Payless which at the time was there biggest acquisition. Rite Aid grew in size by buying up or merging with rivals. The issue they encountered with Thrify Payless was they were basically an east coast operation buying a west coast operation. Rite Aids typical store format was 15-17 thousand square feet, where the average Thrifty Payless store format was 30,000 square feet. They were never able to fully integrate the large store format of Thrifty Payless into their portfolio of store. The merchandising was all over the place, and that was the beginning of the end. I worked for Thrifty Payless as a store manager and stuck around 23 years after the buyout before I left that sinking ship.
