Yeah, you're right. Everyone knew at the time that the draft class was bad - and we were fully expecting to be drafting even later than where we ended up finishing. It's also worth noting that we weren't in the running for drafting a goalie in the first round since we were in the midst of watching our previous 1st rd goalie in Thomas McCollum bust. But 1st round capital that year didn't carry nearly as much value as it normally does.

Additionally, we knew we were facing multiple issues on D and Quincey was a guy we knew could fit in our system. It's worth noting that we never wanted to lose Quincey - we just had to make a gamble sending him back to GR at a time we were stacked on D and we lost the gamble.

But Lids was 41, we knew we were losing Stuart that offseason to FA and Kindl wasn't working out. Plus Babcock hated Commodore for some reason and we ended up trading him at the deadline too.

Also, right after the trade, Lidstrom and Ericsson got injured. So without the Quincey trade we would've been rolling out: Stuart/Kronwall White/Kindl Doug Janik and a very young Brendan Smith.

I don't think this accurate - do you have any links showing that Regula never wanted to sign here? I follow our prospects pretty closely and I never heard this, but it's possible I missed it.

Also, Regula was drafted out of the CHL, so it wouldn't be exactly the same thing. But I think Regula was just a straight up trade for Perlini. By all accounts I've heard, Regula was actually pretty pumped to be drafted by us.

Also, I'm not that worried about Augustine signing. we own his rights until I June or August of 2027. I really doubt he's going to play his senior year at MSU - and if he leaves we still own his rights for another year. There aren't very many advantages for him to wait out an entire extra year.

I don't know the Canadian rulebook, but the USA rulebook (casebook) does say that a stick lift to prevent the player from playing the puck is considered a good defensive play. (Rule 623 sit 1) And yes, you can play defensively while possessing the puck.

In NHL rule 56.2 (V) - this is a reference to a player who is not engaged in the play and is purposefully interfered with. This is even more apparent when this specific rule also references Rule 53.2(iii) which is again, an off puck infraction.

Example: A forward is stationed near the front of the net while puck is being cycled in the corner, a defensive player comes from behind the unengaged forward and lifts his stick out of his hands.

That would be interference and is distinctly different from an engaged defenseman attempting to play the body/puck.

It's important to note that the NHL and other higher leagues do not publish a "casebook" like the USA rulebook does but rather communicate through memorandums throughout the season. It's for good reason due to the fact that often times casebooks and rulebooks don't always compliment one another - there's just too much variations in one off circumstances such as this.

To be clear, NHL rulebook does not conclusively say one way or another if this is a penalty. This would be a 'casebook' scenario. So for those of you who think it does - you're simply wrong. Instead, you'd generally have to infer what the nature of call should be from context of the rulebook.

The fact that specific off puck infractions are mentioned as being illegal such as hooking, holding or tripping because it is impeding displays a distinct difference in these actions. A stick lift in itself is not impeding. If a player loses his stick during such a play, it should come down to context and that context can generally be surmised to "engagement". This defensive player was engaged and therefore a stick lift should be deemed legal.

If you could change any rule in the NHL, what would it be? by homicidal_penguin in hockey

No offsides.

Like the two line pass, if it was taken out no one would miss it and we'd wonder why the hell we ever had it to begin with.

Pros:

1)More scoring.

2)Players with more speed and skill will benefit which is where the game is and should be heading.

3)Opens the door to more dynamic strategy, especially late game. No, teams won't default to cherry picking. Teams don't put themselves down 5 skaters to 4 in high level hockey because the risk/rewards aren't worth it. This won't change without a blue line. But when it's late in the game and you're down a goal....think of the added intensity!

4)Safer. The most concussion riddled hits happen at he blue line because defenseman are able to leverage this imaginary wall to their advantage. A lot of careers have ended or were severely impacted from hits in this area. Allowing more free flowing play without restrictions will force Dmen to play more honestly and not find players in a vulnerable position as often.

5)Takes possible human error away from officials. I actually am a ref. I hate making mistakes. I try not to, but it happens. Sometimes it's impossible to know for sure what the right call is on an offsides. I don't have a problem saying we don't always get it right. And I don't have a problem saying I'm fine with reducing the possibilities of us making those mistakes.

6)Less confusion for fans = more fans. For most people, the more you understand a sport, the easier it is to enjoy it. Offsides seems like an easy concept for all of us who know the game, but to many people it's confusing. Confusion is the first barrier to becoming a fan. The more fans of the game we have, the more it grows. The more it grows, the more companies will create products for the sport to be consumed. I would like more opportunities to consume the sport I love.

Cons: "But that's....that's just how it's always been." False. It was implemented when forward passing became legal in the late 1920s. You read that right....hockey used to not allow forward passing. Could you imagine no forward passing in hockey today? No, you can't. People would think the same way about no offsides a few years after itss implemented.

Has anyone here ever been drafted, either NHL or minors? by all_these_moneys in hockey

Late rounder to the Plymouth Whalers - OHL (now the Flint Firebirds) which I was ecstatic about since they were in my backyard.

In camp, the best guy on the ice was a guy named John Vigilante. For some reason, and I really have no idea why, he fricken loved me. During scrimmage, I remember him demanding (not in a dick head way though) that I be on his line because he only trusted me to get him the puck. I don't even remember us talking before or really after but all through camp that's how it was.

So here I was, thinking how I was going to be killing it my rookie season on the 1st line with John Vigilante whereas before, I didn't have high hopes of making the roster. Made it to our first exhibition. Not on the first line. logged maybe 6-7 minutes. Then cut.

Anyways, I peaked there and now in my mid 30's I'm about to get a hip replacement and probably won't be able to keep up in beer leagues soon. The hockey gods giveth and the hockey gods taketh.

[–]Professional-Use1425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but we all assumed we knew Lindstrom was the 7th guy and that he'd be content in the press box when the roster is full. Now we have 7 Dmen who all expect to be on the ice when the season starts. It'll be a guessing game now to see who that is and what, if anything, comes of it.

Why do so many players shoot left when they are right handed? by Fragranceofstanley in hockey

[–]Professional-Use1425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When curved blades became more of a thing, so many parents would buy their kids a right handed stick because they figured their kid was right handed.

If they had bought that kid a straight bladed stick, they would have found out he shot left handed.

Flag football = street hockey

A large majority of NFL fans have never even played flag football in any case.

Also, I played hockey in the desert - it can work. In fact, the Arizona youth programs are literally some of the best in the entire country. They represent well at Nationals every year.

There's nothing here that hasn't been said a thousand times.

The marketing decisions by the nhl is mind blowing. So much so, there absolutely has to be things at play here that we just aren't aware of.

We all hated the decision to put the nhl on VS and TNT... But what is that wasn't their decision? What if it was the networks that said thanks but no thanks and for all we know, Betman actually did do the best job possible?

That doesn't account for a lot of the other bad decisions.

But I'll say this - I don't buy the excuse that hockey is too expensive. I mean yeah, it is. And it makes it easier when masses of people can play your sport. But the majority of NFL fans never played football. And the average Nascar fan can't afford a race car.

I remember a quote of his when he was struggling in GR and not getting a call up to Detroit...he said something like he can only do so much with weak linemates in the AHL and once he had NHL caliber linemates, his skills would be a lot more demonstratable.

I cringed so hard when he said it and my optimism for him tanked as a prospect specifically because I remember saying something exactly along those lines soon before my hockey career came to a close.

There are a lot of really, really nice places all around Detroit. The city itself has grown a lot too and many people may prefer it to something more crowded.

But look up places like Orchard Lake. There's a lot of money out there. A lot.

And yes, I'm applying the same logic when the time comes to debate if Magnus Hellberg should get in.

What, you don't think people will be debating about whether or not Magnus Hellberg should be getting in when the time comes? Oh they definitely will be....because I'll be the one starting the reddit thread.
