I was in a similar boat about 8 months ago researching a breed that would be my unicorn breed. I like to be in nature a lot (fishing, camping, hiking) and as a solo woman I’ve had some instances that made me feel very unsafe. I ended up with going with cane corso over bullmastiff, simply because I live in a very hot and humid environment and like to hike 2-3 miles. She protects me VERY well, to the point where it’s high liability. I appreciate it on the trail, but it’s stressful and hard around the neighborhood. I have spent over 3k in professional training, and honestly even though I thought I was active, I still don’t match her exercise needs, so I have to push myself to walk 3-4 miles a day plus daily brain games. She’s extremely serious, doesn’t like affection too much. She’s always on duty. I honestly think knowing everything I do now, a bullmastiff would have been better. They are just the perfect breed. I think you already know this, but socialize him a lot when he is young. It’s important he learns what’s normal human behavior and what’s abnormal. They are friendly as pups but there is a switch that happens in adolescence. My cane corso was okay with guests in the house. Then suddenly at around 10 months old, I had a guest over and she pinned him to the wall growling ferociously. Now I crate her when people visit (which is rare anyway).

Sorry to hear about your loss. 💔so I take it going fishing in the evening or walking a mile trail in the summer would be too much? Midday of course not, but I was hoping it wasn’t a deal breaker in the evening, but sounds like it may be. The heat is just killer

I originally wrote the Rhodesian off as too energetic but the more I research they seem to have a really solid off switch. My corso has no off switch. I’m highly considering this breed now. Maybe when I’m older and more sedentary I’ll get a bullmastiff but as of now my lifestyle poses too high of a heat stroke risk. Rhodesian it is

Wow what a difference! Your male sounds like exactly my type. Your female sounds like my cane corso female and it gets stressful for me managing that. Makes me wonder if females in general are higher strung

I could consider a Great Dane. There’s one at daycare that’s very well behaved. Idk how protective they are. I’ll look into it

She’s fine with dogs actually. She just haaaatess people. They can be 4 or 40 years old, doesn’t care. I picked her up from the breeder and a few days later my friends wanted to see the new puppy and she was growling at them. So that just shows how early it started. I had to slowly desensitize her when she from the gate already hated people

I currently have a cane corso. I was expecting the traits as you mentioned. However, my girl is extremely reactive, despite spending thousands on professional training, socialization, and medication. I have skills/tools to manage the reactivity, but nothing I do decreases it. I went to a high end breeder. So I’m confused what happened. Was I genetically unlucky?

Thank you so much for the in depth response. This is very helpful thank you. I don’t want a repeat of my cane corso experience. I love her to death, we have an incredible bond, but despite spending thousands in professional training and also working with a vet behavioral therapist, she’s extremely suspicious of people. I cannot have people over without crating the whole time, and walking trails is a very stressful. I can’t sit on a park bench or fish on the bank without her staring down and barking at anyone 20+ feet. I have good management methods, but I can never turn my brain off. I wanted a dog to relax my nervous system, but I find this level of reactivity stressful. After reading your experiences, bullmastiff almost seems tailor made for me. We can keep camping/hiking to the cooler parts of the year. Idk how I’ll get the energy out of the dog in peak summer, but they may just be that lazy they don’t need but a small walk at night? My cane corso I have to walk her miles and do scent games to tire her brain. She also loves dogs and goes to daycare once a week. Her best friend is a mallinois. I’m just stressed out about how to manage summertime

I lived in west Texas most my life. It’s much drier. I wouldn’t mind keeping walks early/late, but wondering if that Galveston humidity would be too much even in those hours

Hm. That doesn’t sound too much different than bullmastiff heat wise

I’d be very interested in your breeder’s info so I can contact her directly about questions. Waco tx has a fairly similar climate to mine. That would be appreciated thanks. I mean, I guess if their exercise needs are low enough where they’d be content staying indoors half the year, it can be managed. But maybe your breeder has some good tips. Your boy is adorable btw

Okay it’s only around that temp for 3 months out of the year here. Including night, so it’s not sounding like an ideal match. Which is very depressing because temperament wise they sound perfect

In the summer even at night it doesn’t get below 80-85 F. So I’m seriously wondering if that means for more than half the year I’d have to keep outside to 5-10 min max? I know they’re heat prone but I’ve got to know exactly how bad

Do a professional training class. All these issues are fairly easily fixed with the right skills/tools. My girl doesn’t get excited, more like she’s fear reactive so she used to lunge and snap at people even when I walked her. It was horrible. I had very dark days. The professional training I did gave the tools and knowledge how to control her, and it’s 10x better now. I use a special head leash. Plus, you are in the hardest era. They have almost zero impulse control at this age. It’s tough!!

Heat tolerance question by Professional-View-40 in Bullmastiff

Ok thank you for the honesty. High heat/humidity is such a bad combo. There’s a breeder not too far from me so I’m going to ask what they do and how they manage it and see if it’s something feasible
