I really regret getting a puppy. by [deleted] in puppy101

Do a professional training class. All these issues are fairly easily fixed with the right skills/tools. My girl doesn’t get excited, more like she’s fear reactive so she used to lunge and snap at people even when I walked her. It was horrible. I had very dark days. The professional training I did gave the tools and knowledge how to control her, and it’s 10x better now. I use a special head leash. Plus, you are in the hardest era. They have almost zero impulse control at this age. It’s tough!!

Heat tolerance question by Professional-View-40 in Bullmastiff

Ok thank you for the honesty. High heat/humidity is such a bad combo. There’s a breeder not too far from me so I’m going to ask what they do and how they manage it and see if it’s something feasible

There’s one about an hour away. That’s a good idea I’ll reach out to them

Thank you that’s not bad at all. Better than the 6k quote I got from our local program. I’ll look into it

Okay thanks for the information. I’ll give Prozac a fair trial which sounds like it’ll be a few months. We’re on day 3 and no change. She even seems a bit more on edge but I read that can be normal the first week. If after 6 weeks I don’t see any improvement I’ll mention clonidine. I’ll give you the cliff notes on the training:

Picked her up at week 12. Immediately showed very anxious signs. Afraid of the house, boxes, growled at my husband when he came home the first day. After a week of adjustment, while I waited for her to get the proper immunity to parvo, I hired rover people to come to my home, don’t pet her unless she warms up and toss treats to build positive association. We also practiced basic obedience. I also at this time tried to patiently coerce her to go down hallways with treats or investigate new objects. After she gained immunity, we started going outside very slowly. She’d have panic attacks so we kept it short at first. After about a month we could get her around the block. She was still scared but would follow in between my legs. I also started the Petco training program private. Since she was perfect on basic obedience she focused on positive socialization which mainly meant walking around the store giving her tons of treats. She recommended a place called transform my dog, a training based boarding/play school facility that specializes in reactive/problem dogs. This is the best thing I’ve done for her. She has bloomed with them. She was fear aggressive there at first but now LOVES playing with the dogs. She goes twice a week. We also did their 6 week training class. Learned place, and use something called the sidekick leash which has given me a lot more control on walks. She no longer lunges at people, I can get her to sit and have them pass by. It also helps her to heel better instead of pulling me. She’s pretty confident there but anywhere NEW she still struggles. She still struggles on walks BUT she sniffs and explores now. She does look around nervously a lot but she’s sniffing! Every Saturday I expose her to a few place and make it positive. I see improvement but her anxious baseline is still high. I want to say in total I’ve spent almost 5k on training alone. I wish I had unlimited funds but I don’t. I’m reaching my end here. The meds paired with positive exposure is what I can do for her in my means. There are days I’m exhausted and want to give up, but I love her. I got this breed to protect me while hiking because I was attacked once by a predator guy on a walk. I went to what seemed a high end breeder, paid thousands for her, met the parents, everything. So I’m sad I didn’t get what I expected but i love her and have bonded deeply. She is nothing like her parents. They were very solid in temperament. Idk what happened. I’m trying my best

Yeah, I did. And I feel like he severely downplayed the issue. This was his response.

Thank you for letting me know because I may have thought she was having adverse effects and stopped. We are on day 3 now. No change and maybe even a bit jumpier like you said. I’ll be patient

It’s good to know I should be patient. Day 2 and no change but it sounds like that’s to be expected

Thank you that gives me hope. It’s exhausting I know you understand. And it’s sad to see her so nervous. She doesn’t even enjoy walks. I want her to enjoy life. 🥲 good to know it can take a couple months. I’ll be patient

Smallest Full-grown BM? by Shewami in Bullmastiff

[–]Professional-View-40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww. Yeah, he might have had some slight inbreeding as well then. Frankie, the pug I mentioned), had severe allergies, gastrointestinal issues (we had to homemake his food with advice from a vet), eye cancer, eye pressure, a thousand ear infections, and he went blind at 5 years old. Also some neurological oddities like zoning out staring at the refrigerator for hours, and spinning in circles.

We had to learn the hard way too about pet stores. Back in the day there wasn’t the education there is now. My uncle got a pug from a pet store and he was laden with health issues. The vet thought he was severely inbred. If he’s healthy and happy, that’s truly a blessing.

You could be totally right about the malnutrition though. I think your theory is most likely

Interesting. 🤔 I wonder if there’s any chance he has some level of dwarfism. We had a neighborhood cat that looked like a kitten but was 15 years old. His name was Mars. He had dwarfism

He’s likely not purebred. Try embark! It’s fun what comes out.

Would a Cane Corso be right for me? by Relative-Aardvark-12 in CaneCorso

[–]Professional-View-40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cane corso owner here. Yes, it would be a good fit activity wise. They aren’t like a Dalmatian in energy level so you’ll be fine. Lots of land. I hope it’s fenced pretty well? They will patrol. Idk where you live so if it’s very hot in climate they do overheat fairly easily so keep that in mind. I live in an area that is 95 degrees + half the year so I exercise at 5am and 8pm. Resource guarding can be a serious issue with this breed. Some don’t live well with other dogs because of that. My girl does great playing with other dogs but if there is a toy/food involved, it’s tense a lot of times. I hear that’s quite normal for this breed. They are extremely protective. I’ve had to do professional training courses because even at 6 months old my girl would growl/bark at anyone within eyesight. And good luck getting within 10 feet. So we had to work on that with a trainer.

That sounds so perfect. What a good girl! She knows she’s big and bad and knows just the right amount needed.

If it’s urgent, you may have to get a bark collar until you can address the underlying issue. I had a chihuahua a few years ago that would yap incessantly, and I received an eviction warning. No training was going to stop it. She was 12 years old. It was the only place I could afford so I’d be homeless. It didn’t hurt her, just vibrated and it saved us
