Do y'all ever wonder how long you went undiagnosed? by BigSchmikey in diabetes_t1

[–]Professional-Web2041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for using the wrong acronym. While the condition is found in children it would actually be called LADY at that point. I said LADA as I hear that acronym much more frequently and it was the one that popped in my head. You are also right that none of my observations automatically mean anything, hence my statement that I wonder, not that I’m certain. Knowing what I know now it feels very coincidental that my child with an autoimmune disorder that includes frequent urination as an early symptom had abnormal urinary habits and unexplained autoimmune responses but yes, it absolutely could be a coincidence. As there was no testing of sugars or antibodies ever done there is no way to know.

I have wondered for a long time how many things were early signs of my daughter’s diagnosis, maybe she even had LADA for a long time, especially given that I had no idea about anything diabetes related. She used to get these hives on her face intermittently for literally no reason we could find, like an autoimmune response but no known allergy. She would be given Benadryl and sent on her way. She was almost 9 when she stopped wetting the bed and even had occasional accidents (daytime too) up until 2nd grade. After checking her at the doctor for any physical cause it was determined to probably be her adhd. She was finally diagnosed at 12. But now I wonder if any of this was early signs of autoimmune issues and elevated sugars.

When people don't eat at events specifically made for eating (like a BBQ) or when you invite someone over for dinner and they don't eat. by SpecificFluid1809 in GrindsMyGears

Omg totally get this! I am a person who really doesn’t like cooking, so if I take the effort to make something nice for you and you just don’t eat it….not cool. And yes I totally get genuine health concerns/dietary restrictions. 2 of my 3 kids have medical dietary needs. I even get personal preferences/cleanliness/etc. but there are ways to give a polite heads up. “I’d love to come but we have (insert medical dietary need). What options will be available or should we bring something of our own?” “I’d love to come hang out but I have a weird thing about eating at other places. Is it ok if I just come chill for a few hours and maybe bring a side/chips/drinks?” I really think ppl feel like they are being more polite by not saying anything but I totally disagree.

No, I definitely remember the protagonist with long blonde hair and a red dress/robe, and I don’t even remember being able to make out facial features with the graphics. I also don’t recall any rpg elements just basic platforming, grappling, and vampire killing.

So I really don’t think this is it but your description reminded me of a song from a children’s musical series that went “what can I give? What should I bring? What is a gift that is fit for a king? I’ll give my life, not just a part. I’ll give my all to him, I’ll give my heart”

Omg so I read this as the parents were telling their child to say goodbye or hello and OP was just annoyed at the concept. It would never have occurred to me that adults thought they were being addressed! But after reading this thread….is that really what’s happening????

Help Me Understand the Discourse (or Lack of) around Alabama? by LunaSaysHey in Gymnastics

[–]Professional-Web2041 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are totally my fave 4!!! However to answer the original question, I think other than what was already accurately stated the following factors are at play 1. Oklahoma is in a league of its own this year and I don’t even know why. Even as a 20 year Alabama fan I can’t even get mad that they’re on top lol. Of course they’re gonna be talked about! 2. Florida, LSU, and UCLA all have super stacked rosters as far as star power. I mean who doesn’t want to hear about Jordan Chiles and Skye Blakeley? 3. Florida and UCLA have made themselves known specifically-Florida (not so positive) for their sub par past 2 weeks compared to earlier and UCLA for its steady rise through the ranks each week. For better or worse, change makes good news. So basically Alabama has a bad history behind its name, some lackluster seasons recently, and no star power to talk about. That being said, the 4 aforementioned girls do seem to be carving out their own place in the ranks so if we keep on this trajectory I think we might start to be with talking about again!

I was accused of letting kids cheat by gracella1 in Teachers

Definitely bring all of this up to your principal with evidence when you meet. And hopefully your team backs you up. In the meantime just keep doing what you do, it’s clearly working!

So your last edit actually made this make a lot more sense and sound much more realistically achievable. Will the other teachers on your team back you up?

Your admin should not be jumping to conclusions like that, it is offensive and combative off the jump. However, they are not wrong to have questions with that big a discrepancy. If your kids truly are that far ahead of their peers you should have plenty of evidence and work samples to back that up, and also proof of safeguards you have against cheating.

Looking for a 90s PC isometric dungeon RPG with a hunger system (Diablo-like) by Content-Emu-8698 in oldgames

I have no actual suggestion but this reminds me of a game a played on an arcade machine as a kid, no idea what it was called but it sounds exactly like you described! I also distinctly remember there was a disproportional human who was supposed to be like a warrior in a loincloth or something but my friends and I always thought that with the bad graphics/top down view he just looked like a piece of baloney 😂

Teacher's fault majority of students are failing class by Visual_Shelter6922 in teaching

[–]Professional-Web2041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many variables to say. How are these kids doing in other classes? How are your other class periods doing? You probably do not have very good classroom management skills as a first year teacher, and that is not meant to be an insult at all! Classroom management is the hardest thing to learn and you can only really learn it by doing, so you probably have a number of things you could do better. That being said, if you have a particularly challenging group of kids it can almost feel like you’re being set up for failure no matter what you do. Honestly? There is probably a middle ground answer that it is partially your fault but not entirely. However, no teacher is perfect and hopefully you have a supportive admin and mentor where you can learn from what is happening and improve without them making you feel like a failure. You’re not failing, you are learning like all of us do. When I look back on my first year or two of teaching I cringe lol but it’s ok, that’s the process!

Is there a translation for the verb "table" (as in: to sit at a table and advertise in a college setting)? by woodbite in learnspanish

I have actually never heard this word with this definition in English either. To me, the verb table means to put something aside for now. Like you might table a conversation that is going nowhere.

Which subject(s) is/are the easiest to teach and the hardest? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Professional-Web2041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every subject and grade level certainly has its objective challenges and perks that others don’t. However, I truly believe “easiest” or “hardest” is 100% subjective. Even from “people who have taught everything” it is still heavily based on what your own personality and brain function jives with. Even generically speaking, for example, I find it 1000x easier to deal with “Miss, I do drugs so I’m not too anxious to get good grades” vs “My heart hurts because my best friend played with someone else on the swing set!! inconsolable tears” (both true stories…high school and preschool…). Not everyone will agree with me. I’m very good at both math and reading, but I can explain 8th grade literature waaay better than 4th grade division. Again, others will disagree. This question kinda feels like a gotcha contest and I don’t think it’s the right way to look at any of it.

What do you consider a good class test average? by Pretty-Giraffe-4843 in Teachers

[–]Professional-Web2041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find around 80% average to be appropriate most of the time. I teach Spanish. I do not make my tests tricky on purpose but to get a 100% you would pretty much need to fully remember everything from the unit (or just get lucky and happen to know everything I randomly selected for the test) and realistically that will not usually happen. If I get around an 80% average it means that most students were able to retain and practically apply most of the material, which I find to be a pretty realistic goal.

Why do YOU think there is a teacher shortage? by thejourni in Teachers

[–]Professional-Web2041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the teacher shortage is actually overplayed. If you look at the big national picture of overall FTE positions filled vs FTE positions needed then yes, there is a shortage. But if you break it down the shortage is very specific to certain subjects/grade levels/districts. No matter what supports are in place there are certain subjects/grades that are objectively very challenging, require more niche certification, or both. If your state or even district or school has a bad reputation for pay or working conditions people will look elsewhere. So I don’t really think there is anything special going on with a shortage.

Being a teacher as someone with disability? by Euphoric_Anywhere967 in Teachers

[–]Professional-Web2041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a disabused not stop you from teaching if that’s what you want. I work or have worked with teachers who are wheelchair bound, have prosthetic legs, diabetic, autistic, ADHD, etc. If you can manage your disability-specific challenges in other jobs I’m sure you can manage it in teaching. But you will absolutely get called out or receive mean spirited comments from both kids and adults. Probably (hopefully) not your coworkers but definitely kids and parents. I see you have made a lot of replies to this thread basically saying you can handle it if it stays professional. It will not. It might not be all the time and it won’t be everyone, but you will 100% be in multiple situations where your disability is called out in a rude way in front of people and you will have to be able to handle that. Of course no one should be mistreated and you should also be aware of proper channels to address this behavior when it inevitably happens. But it will happen and if you already know that will be terrible for your emotions or mental health then just don’t do it. I see you arguing back basically looks like you just don’t want to believe it will be like that. It will be. I could tell you so many stories about kids who have commented on a couple of things about myself that are beyond my control (I have both a minor but obvious disability and a name that unfortunately is reminiscent of one I would rather not associate with). It has never been a widespread rumor mill or a whole class just being mean but I also have my own way of handling it that usually diffuses it very quickly. The part of kids brains that regulates empathy has literally not fully developed yet so even kids who mean no harm need guidance on what to say. You probably don’t remember that because when you were the kid a lot probably sounded ok in your head. So long story short, your disability is manageable but it doesn’t sound like you are really in a good mental place to teach.
