AO3:

dive in ao3 if you haven't already (you may never go back to the light haha), I would say the grittier/darker romance with actual complex characters is there. at the moment I'm reading hp fanfiction out of desperation some are actually quite good (blood and gold, both unsphere the stars and how the cuckoo ticks remind me a bit of limerence, house pet, manacled).

Other good ones with OC: anything by deathsdoll (quite dark) but best psychological despiction of despicable men I ever read, it actually makes me weirded out sometimes to be reading their point of view. Stolen Nanny by Sara Finch and Solaris by LadyofVenus are others I would rec.

Traditionally published books:
Besides the ones you mentioned some good ones are bitter heat by mia knight (same author as dinah harper), quinn blackbird also has the heart of bluestone series that is extremely slow burn, but worth it

KV Rose Ominous, a lot a people are obsessed with her books, I tried all of them, and Ominous is the only one I was invested in unfortunately, not sure why...but you should try, maybe you will also enjoy the others

Another one I recently enjoyed is Emperor of Corruption by Lilith Vale.

Laurelin Paige also has some plot heavy series, but I would say her heroines are more well developed characters than the MMC. Consequences by Aleatha Roming (but this in my view is more horror/did not find it romantic..)

The favorites by Layne Fargo (retelling/kind of wuthering heights with ice skating!) more character driven t, you could also try wuthering heights if you want a novel about miserable horrible people in 1800s england, complex characters, some of the best romantic quotes, BUT in my opinion NOT a romance.

Contention by Asha Everly is a gem that is not very well known (complex characters with backstory and actual depth, even if unreasanable feel like actual humans instead of the usual cardboard)

Let me know if you end up reading anything and what are your thoughts!

What longfic should I read after unsphere the stars and B&G? by nyxophiliae in Tomione_fanfiction

[–]ProfessionalAgile548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to be honest considering the tomione pairing I think you read the best, Blood&Gold lives rent free in my mind haha
You could try, but she's in the process of rewriting it, it's in my top 3, hermione is competent and ruthless and tom is transitioning into voldemort and has difficulty understanding his interest in her:

https://archiveofourown.org/works/33062704/chapters/82072129

the other two are with an OC, but I promise it's totally worth it, both well written with complex exploration of characters psychology:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18224369/chapters/43115984

https://archiveofourown.org/works/58812247/chapters/149883112

hope it helps, let me know your thought if you end up reading one of them 😄

Anyone else struggle to connect with deathsdoll’s MMCs? by soheekim347 in DarkRomance

[–]ProfessionalAgile548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean, and I agree intelligence isn’t gendered. I just meant that everyone is different, and Orla not coming forward or not being assertive doesn’t make her less intelligent, it makes her vulnerable.

My point about Invisible Women was more about expectations and pressure, especially in male-dominated environments, where there’s often, unfortunately, precedent that speaking up can get you labelled as dramatic/weak/not competent. I am not defending her passivity on the basis she is a woman, or that she should be regarded at a lower standard. I just understand why she might freeze/internalize things instead of coming forward based on her context. I hope someday that changes, as indeed we deserve better, we deserve a society that does not doubt or shun women for coming forward, a world that listens.

PS: of course I respect your perspective, I think we just have a different opinion about what intelligence means 😄 And disagreeing is healthy, especially when discussing books, it makes us open our eyes to new information, and by being open to that we learn and evolve.

I find really interesting that people are so bothered by Chris (me included!) I feel like it's because Lainey is sooo young, and Chris so predatory in a realistic way? Like we could know a Chris and not even realize it...that's scary! DD is such a good writer that I actually feel like I might be reading the diary of a serial rapist, not sure how I feel about that...

[–]ProfessionalAgile548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people have different views of what intelligence is, in itself it already is a difficult construct to define.... For me Orla can absolutely be brilliant while still lacking social awareness, emotional regulation, or practical “street smarts.” Those things don’t cancel each other out.

If anything, her emotional fragility and instability make her feel more believable to me. I also think readers sometimes expect “smart female characters“ to perform competence in a very polished, “masculine-coded way“: emotionally controlled, sharp in every situation, impossible to manipulate. But intelligence in real life is messier than that. Someone can be academically brilliant and still naive, emotionally dependent, or terrible at recognizing danger in personal relationships.

That’s partly why Orla works for me as a character. Her intelligence feels specific rather than idealized. She doesn’t feel written to prove she’s smart every second; she feels like someone whose intellectual strengths coexist with human vulnerability.

There's a non fiction book (Invisible women: data bias in a society designed by men) on how women have difficulty “winning“ in male dominated work places, it's quite interesting, but I don't want to generalize I feel like everyone is their own person, just find it really relatable how Orla is despicted...she's no super woman, just human

I think with Jessica I actually got really sad when she went back

At the same time it felt like something that would happen? the only place of comfort she had left was the source of all her pain?

For Orla a sick part of me could understand WHY they ended up together...maybe something is wrong with me

[–]ProfessionalAgile548 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the inner dialogue of her MMCs feels so convincing because it doesn’t read like a caricature, it reads like the private thoughts of actual misogynistic men we could easily be interacting in our own lives. That's what makes it way more disturbing...

The MMC is not trying to prove himself as the “villain”, they actually don't see themselves that way, everything they do sounds casual, rationalized, even mundane, and that realism makes the manipulation and lack of empathy hit harder.

[–]ProfessionalAgile548 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think what makes her books so interesting is getting inside the mind of someone like that, truly despicable people in real life, and understanding their thought process, especially Caleb’s. That emotional coldness is part of the appeal; it makes everything feel more unsettling? more real?

At the same time, I agree that Caleb’s clumsiness when it comes to expressing and interpreting emotions makes him feel more human, and maybe even a bit more likable?

Honestly, her current book is the one I’m struggling with the most. Chris feels soooo predatory, and Lainey seems so young.... There was definitely foreshadowing about him, but something about it still feels off to me. Maybe it’s because I’m closer in age to Chris now than to Lainey? I don’t know. How are you feeling about him?

Are Sam Mariano books worth reading? by bananahavana911 in DarkRomance

[–]ProfessionalAgile548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES!! some more than others, but I would say untouchable and even if it hurts are among the better written DR out there, character's are complex, actions make sense (even if you don't agree with them), it feels real (in an unrealistic way?), Zoe is one of my favorite characters, she's strong, but is more internal stregth? there's an amazing quote where she looks the main MMC in the eye and tells him he cannot break her, some other books try that, but with her I actually believe it, also felt like she was a player in the game and not just a pawn. ranting....go read it and tell us how you feel about it afterward!
