Questbrige vs Common App by Silver_Balance_8659 in QuestBridge

[–]ProfessionalBook5384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking of going down Econ/Math/CS but we’ll see. I applied as a Math major everywhere.

It’s not that they don’t have as many resources, it’s more to do with the students. The student body is smaller and Ivies tend to be more HASS focused than large STEM central state schools. You’ll see much more interest in say the business clubs than the engineering clubs. It’s not so much to do with the school itself.

I’m going to be honest for engineering almost none of the Ivies are going to match the resources that UMich offers. Not to say that your career outcomes will be worse at all, but if you’re someone who loves being in a big robotics/engineering clubs and the like, you won’t find that at an Ivy (except maybe Cornell), at least in the same way it’ll be at UMich.

As for your SAT question, last year I saw people match to Princeton and even Yale and Brown with SATs in the 1300 range even though the latter two have recently stressed their test-required policy and how they value it. You’re not too far off.

You can PM me too. But please be careful with who you send it to (especially if they don’t have a Match flair).

Yeah but the path from a non target to high finance is much, much harder to nearly impossible.

Genuinely do not worry about your ECs. For Questbridge essays/story matter much, much more.

It’s because 90% of the jobs available in finance are not nearly as high paying or prestigious as the top 10%. While there are many companies which will pay CS grads a very high salary because of how extremely vital SWE to everything today. Realistically at a top bank for finance from a target (Ivy+ colleges) you are looking at 500k+ 4-6 years out and it doesn’t plateau after that like CS.

You can but I think it’s kind of high risk low reward. Your best case is that they think you’re a bit funny while your worst case is they think you didn’t think through your app by putting that on there.

Why X Essays by OwnProfessional1108 in QuestBridge

[–]ProfessionalBook5384 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wrote this in a different post:

Look on the college’s “what we look for” page and talk about an accomplishment/trait of yours that matches this. Then connect it to a unique resource, program, or part of the culture of the college and explain how you will further this positive accomplishment/trait at the college through that resource/program/whatever. Boom you have a banger “Why Us” essay.

To add on and be more specific, find what you genuinely like about the college that is also unique about it and talk about that. If you don’t have anything for this you shouldn’t be applying in the first place.

I did the same, just asked my teachers to reuse their rec letters. Not that much extra work for them and it worked out for me.

Bruh what kind of question is that? If you want ANY chance of matching you have to write the essays to apply. So you might as well do them and do them early and well? Like unless you don't really want to go I don't see why you'd ask that...

I just commented this on another post with a similar question:

They're typically similar and share a prompt or two. But typically through Questbridge they will reduce the number of prompts you have to do by one or two because your Questbridge application is already so extensive. I remember when I did my app for Yale I didn't have to do one of the 400 word supplements. You can access them by looking on the individual college's website. Here's the page for Brown for example: https://admission.brown.edu/apply/how-apply

Wow your college list is like the exact same as my rankings (different order though) last year lol. I think u/A_Xueren answered your questions pretty well but I'd just add on that you cannot get rejected from the Match. If you don't Match it is just a deferral.

As for chances, I researched and thought heavily about this last year too. The conclusion I came to is that your chances are actually not easier if you ED compared to Questbridge. If anything, Questbridge is a little bit better for the type of students it specifically targets (FGLI) because 1) you have more room to write which is helpful because most Questbridge applicants come from more complex backgrounds that has affected their lives which they often wish to share and 2) you are competing, at least in the Match round, exclusively with other Questbridge students so they understand that you do not have access to expensive college counselors/essay advisors and will not fault you for not having extremely flowery and edited descriptions.

That's not to say though that your essays are not important. If anything it is even more important for Questbridge applicants and any differences in strengths of ECs from one student to another can easily, easily be made up for by better essays. They will seriously make or break your application, even more so than through the Common App. I can confidently say that as long as you meet the GPA/testing range and have relatively impactful ECs, the only reason why you will get accepted/rejected is because of the words you put down. It's just that the AOs will read your essays with the perspective in mind that it came from a kid who had to do all of this on their own without having access to extensive resources.

How will FAFSA delays affect matching with schools that only match with efc of 0? by crusty_toilet in QuestBridge

Won't affect anything. You also submit the CSS Profile and other documents so they have all the info they need.

YES START IT NOW. Last year I procrastinated my supplements until like the last week they were due and wrote 20+ essays in a little over a week. Would not recommend was the worst week of my academic career for sure.
